In the spring-summer season in the years 2005 and 2006 (every year) three vegetation experiments were carried out with three species of ornamental plants: common sunflower (Helianthus annus ‘Pacino’), scarlet sage (Salvia splendens ‘Fuego’), tagetes erecta (Tagetes erecta ‘Inca Yellow’). These plants were planted in a substrate artificially contaminated by cadmium. Doses of cadmium applied in the experiment represent different degrees of contamination. The dose of 1 mg Cd ∙ dm⁻³ indicates natural contents; 5 mg Cd ∙ dm⁻³ – small contamination; 10 mg Cd ∙ dm⁻³ – large contamination. The objective of the presented studies was the determination what quantities of cadmium pass from the substrate to the organs of the studied plants and which plant organs accumulate the greatest amounts of cadmium. Cadmium was mainly accumulated in leaves and shoots, then in inflorescences. While the least amount of this metal was found in the roots with the exception of Tagetes erecta where the greatest amount of cadmium was found in roots, then in leaves and shoots, while the lest amount was in inflorescences. The greatest cadmium contents were found in the roots of Tagetes erecta, in leaves and shoots of Salvia splendens, and in the inflorescences of Helianthus annus. Among the studied ornamental plant species, the plants of Tagetes erecta were characterized by the highest cadmium uptake.
Sedges are attractive ornamental plants, thanks to the specific structure of their inflorescences, perigynium morphology, an interesting habit and extended dates of individual phenological stages varying between species. Analyses were conducted on 15 sedge species differing in traits of their inflorescence shoots and varying in the shape and size of perigynia. Species characteristic of diverse habitats were selected so that they would meet the full spectrum of requirements of landscape architects. A nine-point scale was applied in this study, in which the decorative value of the investigated sedges was assessed. The greatest decorative value scores were recorded for Carex spicata, C. remota and C. pallescens (19 points each) and C. paniculata (18). In contrast, the lowest scores were found for C. ericetorum (12), C. digitata (13) and C. curta (14). Sedges planted in gardens are highly desirable elements of the landscape, particularly thanks to the phenotypic plasticity observed practically in all species throughout the entire vegetative season.
Sensitivity of imagines and larvae of the lesser mealworm to selected species and strains of entomopathogenic nematodes was studied in a pine sawdust litter on which chicken were kept from one to six weeks according to their production cycle (Niemiec 1998). The following nematode species and strains were used: S. feltiae from bioinsecticides Ovinema and Nemaplus, S. affinis, S. carpocapsae and H. bacteriophora strain Brecon. S. feltiae from biopreparation Ovinema appeared most invasive to the larvae and imagines of A. diaperinus.
One of the reasons lowering the esthetic appearance of a lawn are diseases caused by fungi. The study on seed material of 11 ornamental grass species was carried out in 2009 and 2010. 681 fungi isolates belonging to 22 species and non-sporulating forms were obtained over the two year study period. Among fungi pathogenic to grasses, species of the genus Fusarium were obtained especially in 2010. In that year, isolates of these fungi constituted 29.94% of all isolated colonies. Colonies of Alternaria alternata were also frequently isolated from the analyzed seed material of the ornamental grasses; in 2009 and 2010 its isolates accounted for respectively 25.36 and 12.57% of all isolates. The study on the health of ornamental grasses conducted in field conditions revealed the occurrence of plants with necrosis of the roots and lower stem internodes. The percentage of such plants ranged from 12% for Coix lacryma-jobi to 69% in the case of Festuca ovina. The mean values of the diseases indices were from 2.6 in the case of Coix lacrymajobi to 39.6 for Lagurus ovatus and they differed significantly. From the infected plants mainly species of genus Fusarium were obtained. Majority of isolates consisted F. oxysporum and also F. culmorum, F. crookwellense, F. graminearum, F. solani, F. avenaceum, F. sporotrichioides and species Bipolaris sorokiniana and Exserohilum pedicellatum were obtained. Studies on susceptibility of the seedlings of seven ornamental grass species to infection by Fusarium culmorum No. 34 and F. equiseti No. 62 were conducted in a growth chamber. The statistical analysis of disease indexes for plants that grew in the experimental combination with artificial infection of the subsoil with abovementioned strains as compared to the control indicated significant differences in all studied species in the case of F. culmorum and in 5 species in the experimental combination with F. equiseti. Strain Fusarium culmorum No. 34 proved to be the most pathogenic towards Festuca glauca (98.25), and F. equiseti No. 62 towards Phalaris canariensis (89.5).
This paper describes 10 natural monuments, including 12 specimens of rowan trees, representing three following species: Sorbus aria (2), S. aucuparia (7) and S. latifolia (1). It also presents a comprehensive analysis of all rowan trees admitted as natural monuments in Poland.
