Two hundred samples of alcohol of illicit origin have been examined. Research indicates, that illicit alcohol does not meet the basic requirements for food ingredients and may be contaminated with substances of all sorts and kinds. Toxic amounts of methanol, ethylene glycol, or other compound able to induce acute poisoning rarely occur, but they constitute a real threat of loss of health or life. In case of chronic, daily intake of illicit alcohol there is a danger of severity of symptoms of hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity as a result of chloroform and ethanol interaction. Chloroform is formed during the precipitation of bitrex with sodium hypochlorite and was detected in 84% of the samples. In the case of ethanolcontamination with methylethylketone thatcontains5-methylheptanone-3, neurotoxic symptoms appearance can be expected among alcohol addicts.
