To assess seroprevalence of Neospora spp. in asymptomatic horses in Ankara, Turkey, 19 mares and 56 stallions older than 2 years of age were examined using ELISA; 9.3% of the horses were seropositive. Seroprevalence of N. caninum in mares was twice of that in stallions (15.8 vs 7.1%) and all appeared to be asymptomatic.
Flexor tendonitis and suspensory desmitis are among most prevalent musculoskeletal injuries observed in racehorses. The aim of this study was to determine which horse and race-related parameters can help to diminish the possibility of injury or – when injury has occurred – to evaluate the potential for the horse to continue a successful career after convalescence. Special attention was given to the comparison of Arabian and Thoroughbred racehorses. 187 horses with ultrasonographically visible lesions were included in the study. Following parameters were analyzed: structure (Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon [SDFT], Deep Digital Flexor Tendon [DDFT], Suspensory Ligament [SL]); percentage of cross sectional area increase; hypoechogenic lesion character; in horses with SDF tendonitis – tendonitis grade according to Genovese. This study showed that Thoroughbreds are more at risk of musculoskeletal problems than Arabian racehorses. In both breeds, the most frequent injuries concern SDFT, then SL. Over 95% of tendonitis concern forelimbs. In Thoroughbreds, the prevalence of tendonitis is higher in bigger horses, in males when compared to females and in fence / steeple racehorses when compared to flat track racehorses. The inside limb is more at risk of SDF tendonitis, when the external limb – of SL desmitis. Tendonitis severity increases with age and is greater in steeplechasers when compared to flat track racehorses. The outcome of tendonitis without hypoechogenic lesion is much better than that with hypoechogenic lesion. Evaluation of hypoechogenic lesion length is an easy and accurate prognosis tool, as the chances of returning to racing drop dramatically with lesions longer than 12 cm.
The aim of this study was to measure emotional arousal in young race horses as expressed by heart rate (HR) during routine situations of grooming, hoof cleaning, and while at rest, having been transported from the environment of home stud farm to that of an unfamiliar training centre. A hypothesis was developed that the change of environment is a source of heavy stress for young race horses. The investigation involved 22 Purebred Arabian stallions and 19 Purebred Arabian mares, 2.5 years old, and 11 Thoroughbred stallions and 10 Thoroughbred mares, at the age of 1.5 years. The horses were examined twice: first in their home stud farms, and then three days after being moved to an unfamiliar training centre. The HR was measured at rest and while the horses were being groomed in their boxes. The HR registered during the grooming session at the new stable increased significantly in all studied groups of horses compared to the data obtained at their home stud farm. This increase was significantly higher in the groups of 1.5-year–old Thoroughbred stallions and mares than in the groups of 2.5-year-old Purebred Arabian horses. Young race horses should not be groomed just before training because the grooming routine involves their emotional arousal.
The study aimed at estimating variance components of racing ability traits in Polish Arab horses as a contribution to defining the breeding objective for the breed. Data collected were 8754 placings at finish (square root), 5805 earnings (log), and 1317 numbers of annual starts (square root) of 928 horses running in races over the years 1998-2001. Age of horses ranged from 3 to 10 years, and the distances were from 1400 m to 3000 m. Horses came from 4 state studs and from private (Polish and foreign) breeders. Variance components were estimated by the REML method. Statistical analysis accounted for fixed effects of race within year, age, sex, weight carried and distance, and for the random effects of rider and permanent environment, as well as additive genetic effect of an animal. Model for number of starts within a season omitted the race, rider, weight carried, and distance effects. Pedigrees were at least three generations deep. Heritability coefficients were 0.14, 0.25 and 0.12, and repeatability 0.29, 0.47 and 0.23 for earnings, placings at finish and annual number of starts, respectively.
The research material consisted of 850 two-year-old Thoroughbred horses of both sexes representing Polish breeding. The animals came to Race Track in Służewiec to participate in trainings. The animals were observed for the incidence of trauma during the period of four years: from the middle of December 1985 to the end of December 1989. On the basis of the observations, leg injuries were recognised in 513 (60.4%) horses. Total number of injuries was 861 (some horses were injured more than once). In cases of pathologic changes observed in legs or limp, the animals were subjected to detailed orthopaedic examination in Służewiec Horse Hospital in Warsaw. In most cases radiological images were taken to confirm the diagnosis. The fetlock joints were the ones, which were most frequently injured in the horses examined. The incidence of trauma was high and constituted almost half of all the recognised injuries.
