The possibility to decrease the size of enlarged prostate glands in dogs by cryodestruction using a liquid nitrogen was evaluated. The operations were done on 14 sick dogs with enlarged prostate glands. Each lobe of the prostate gland was thawed from the external part using a flat cryoapplicator. The manner of thawing (time, number of foci, range) differed due to the size of the gland and the general state of health of the dogs. The results varied. It was found that the prognosis is worse when a greatly enlarged prostate gland is thawed than in the case of a mildly enlarged gland. In 3 dogs the prostate gland decreased by about 50%, in 2 dogs the gland decreased 4 times, and in 3 dogs after 12 months only a small swell on the urethra as a residue of the prostate was noted. In 1 dog one thawed lobe was diminished about three times. In 1 dog the size of the prostate did not diminish because inside the thawed lobes were formed holes containing sero-purulent exudate. Four dogs (with significantly enlarged prostates) died after the operation or were killed by their owners because of a generally bad state of health or the destruction of the urethra during operation leading to peritonitis.
