The studies on Asphodelus albus Miller flowers were conducted in the Botanical Garden of the UMCS in Lublin in the years 2004-2005. The flower nectaries location was determined in a stereoscopic microscope. The nectaring abundance was studied with a pipette method described by Jabłoński and Szklanowska (1979), while pollen efficiency determined after Warakomska's ether method (1972). Pollen viability was computed in a sample of 400 grains after acetocarmine staining. The following measurements of pollen grains were made: the length of polar axis (P), equatorial longitudinal axis (EL) and equatorial transverse axis (ET). In Asphodelus albus flowers, there are three nectary glands located in the ovary septa whose outlets are situated in the upper part of the ovary. The nectar secretion starts in a dehiscing bud and persists until the withering stage of perianth leaves. Considering the size of monocolpate pollen grains of Asphodelus albus, they are ranked among great, whereas their shape assumed flattened and circular at the polar view. In the Poland climatic conditions, a pollen showed high vitality (98%). The Asphodelus albus plants constitute a valuable source of nutrition for the pollinators as a single flower generated on average 4,22 mg sugars and 0,2 mg of pollen grains.
In the years 2004-2006, investigations on the abundance of pollen production in two cultivars of Lonicera kamtschatica (Sevast.) Pojark. - Atut and Duet, were conducted at the Felin Experimental Farm of the Agricultural University in Lublin. Moreover, the viability of pollen grains was estimated and measurements of their size were taken. Ten flowers of both studied cultivars supplied 11.42 mg of pollen and the average pollen productivity per 1 ha of a several-years-old plantation was 30.04 kg. The pollen of the observed plants was eagerly collected by honey bees. Pollen grains of both cultivars are suboblate. Considering their size, they can be described as large ones (P=47.55 µm, E=60.37 µm). Pollen viability for both cultivars is high, about 95%.
This paper is a second part of publication concerning the flowering and pollen value of some species of the Umbelliferae family. They were: Aegopodium podagraria L., Angelica silvestris L., Anthriscus silvestris L. (Hoffm), Chaerophyllum aromaticum L., Eryngium planum L., Heracleum sibiricum L., Pastinaca saliva L. The aim of a present paper was to estimate a pollen efficiency and insect visit of examined species. The mean pollen mass produced by 100 flowers differed among species and their successive rows. The highest mean mass of pollen was obtained from 100 flowers of Heracleum sibiricum, the lowest from Chaerophyllum aromaticum, respectively. Mean pollen efficiency per one plant was highest for Pastinaca saliva (215.3-333.2 mg), the lowest for Aegopodium podagraria (55.7-80.9 mg). The best pollen producers per one plant and 1 m2 were: Pastinaca saliva, Heracleum sibiricum and Angelica silvestris. Differentiation of pollen grains measurements was found between successive rows of the examined species. The lowest dispersion of pollen grains measurements was recorded for Chaerophyllum aromaticum and Anthriscus silvestris, while the highest for Heracleum sibiricum. Under good weather conditions all examined species were visited by various insects, they collected both nectar and pollen. The most intensive visitation was noticed on 1 m2 of Eryngium planum, the lowest on Anthriscus silvestris and Chaerophyllum aromaticum.
