Background: The origin and prevalence of cerebral palsy can hardly be considered fully understood. The relationship between orthopedic and neuropsychiatric disorders in children with cerebral palsy in the available literature is also insufficiently presented. Material/Methods: Authors conducted a clinical and epidemiological analysis and examined the nature of motor disorders in 267 children with cerebral palsy aged from 3 to 16 years old. The monitoring period of patients ranged from 3 to 7 years. They underwent clinical neurological examination, radiography of the spine and joints, ultrasound examination of the joints and periarticular structures, electroencephalography and electroneuromyography in dynamics, with the help of a variational cardiointervalography characterized by an autonomic dysfunction (Veyn AM, 2000), studied the biomechanical parameters of walking, using scorecards, questioning and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment using the special system to cerebral palsy (Pinchuk D Yu, Dudin MG, 2002). Results: In 80% of cases, brain damage occurred during fetal development. The authors distinguished primary and secondary disorders of movements. 71 persons (26.6%) had neurogenic and myogenic contractures, and in 196 people (73.4%) contractions were exacerbated by bone deformities. In the rehabilitation system 163 people (61 %) had a need for a surgical operation. Conclusions: The efficiency ratio of the functional status after rehabilitation in different age groups has improved by 10-22% more than before the treatment. It was shown objectively that improvement in the motor capacity in patients with cerebral palsy due rehabilitation has a positive effect on the function of the cerebral cortex.
The objective of this retrospective study was to report the history, signalment, frequency, types, complications, and long-term outcome of long bone fractures in cattle treated using external coaptation techniques. The sex, age, breed, history, physical examination findings, and radiographic findings were recorded. Of 35 cases with long bone fractures treated using external coaptation, 31 were discharged alive. The mean hospitalization time for these cattle was 2 days. Six to 12 months after treatment, 26 (84%) cases were considered satisfactorily healed. It was concluded that cattle with long bone fractures could be treated successfully using external coaptation with minimal effect on productivity.
Introduction. Supracondylar fractures of the humeral bone are frequent injuries in children. It has been affirmed that supracondylar fractures have an excellent prognosis when proper treatment is applied. Objective. Present of the statistical relationships between fractures occurring and patient’s development period; the relation between development period and site of the fracture and statistical relationship between development period and gender of the patients. Also indicated are the place of residence of the hospitalized patients and time of admission to the Clinic after injury. Materials and method. Research was based on the data of paediatric patients treated in the Clinic for Paediatric Surgery, Traumatology and Paaediatric Orthopaedics, and Rehabilitation Clinic of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland, between 1986- 2010. An independent Chi-square Test was used for statistical analysis (c²). Results. The majority of patients were admitted to the Clinic on the day of injury. Of these patients, 71% lived in the urban area of the Lublin region where all the children received medical care in hospital directly after trauma; 29% of children came from the rural areas of the Lublin region, and 10% of them were admitted to hospital 24 or more hours after the injury. Conclusion. 71% of patients lived in the urban areas of the Lublin region and the main cause of injury was a fall from a higher level onto an outstretched upper left limb. Most supracondylar fractures of the humeral bone concerned children at school and adolescent age. Despite the fact that some of the hospitalised children lived in the rural areas of the Lublin region, the majority were admitted to the Clinic directly after trauma and received timely treatment.
The management of comminuted tibial fractures is a challenging problem in small animal orthopedics. External skeletal fixators with Maynard clamps and Schanz pins are commonly used for the osteosynthesis of such fractures. The aim of this study was to perform a clinical assessment of Schanz pins with type 11 frame external fixators in the treatment of comminuted tibial fractures, and the possibility of pin changing when osteolysis and pins loosening appear using Maynard clamps. Schanz pins and external fixators were applied in five dogs. The healing of the treated tibia bones was noted in all cases. Radiological signs of osteolysis, pin loosening and pin tract discharge were observed in two dogs. The results obtained indicate that Schanz pins with type II frame external fixators are reliable and easily manageable. It was also ascertained that Maynard clamps are especially useful for quick pin changing.
