The study of floral nectary structures of thirteen ornamental apple cultivars examined using light microscope (MS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) was performed. It was found that nectary glands in the selected cultivars were located in the upper part of the flower receptacle, between the ovary of the pistil and the base of stamen filaments, and they generally belonged to the epimorphic or transitoric type. The nectary surface area, its thickness, the number of glandular tissue layers, the height of epidermal cells of the nectary and the thickness of the outer wall of the epidermis, together with the cuticle, were determined by light microscope. By using SEM, the structure of the surface of nectaries in four ornamental apple cultivars was observed. The epidermis of the upper part of the nectaries was composed of elongated cells of which outer cell wall was covered with a striated cuticle. The remaining part of the nectary was characterised by cells of similar arrangement and shape, but their surface was marked by a thinner and smoother layer of cuticle. Closed or opened stomata were generally situated at the level of the epidermal cells. Their pores were often filled with granular or plate-shaped structures.

W doświadczeniu przeprowadzonym w latach 2007-2008 oceniono wzrost, kwitnienie i owocowanie drzew dziewięciu odmian ozdobnych jabłoni: ‘Eleyi’, ‘Kobendza’, ‘Lemoinei’, ‘Makowiecki’, ‘Ola’, ‘Red Sentinel’, ‘Rudolph’, ‘Szafer’ i ‘Wierdak’ rosnących na podkładce A.2, w drugim i trzecim roku uprawy. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników wzrostu drzew zaliczono odmiany: ‘Red Sentinel’, ‘Kobendza’, ‘Makowiecki’, ‘Eleyi’ do silnie rosnących. Odmiany ‘Wierdak’ i ‘Rudolph’ do odmian o umiarkowanej sile wzrostu. Natomiast odmiany ‘Lemoinei’, ‘Ola’ i ‘Szafer’ do słabo rosnących. Najobficie kwitły i owocowały drzewa odmian: ‘Wierdak’, ‘Eleyi’, ‘Ola’, ‘Kobendza’, ‘Red Sentinel’ i ‘Szafer’. Do odmian o małej liczbie kwiatów i owoców zaliczono: ‘Makowiecki’ i ‘Lemoinei’, a małej liczbie owoców odmianę ‘Rudolph’.

In the Botanical Garden - Center for Biological Diversity Conservation, Polish Academy of Sciences, about 700 accessions of genus Malus Mill. have been collected since 1987; among them 164 genotypes of 51 species and decorative forms and 550 old, historical cultivars. Majority of the species are known from natural stands, e.g. M. sylvestris, M. sargentii, M. coronaria, 9 are the crossings, e.g. M. x arnoldiana, M. x micromalus, 5 are decorative cultivars, e.g. Hillieri, Red Tip, Dolgo. Seedlings population of M. sieversii coming from Central Asia, considered as the main progenitor of cultivated apple trees counts 100 individuals. An attempt was made to classification of collected materials from systematic point of view. There are some inconsistences in case of the 7 taxa, e.g. M. ellerwangeriana it is actually M. pumila f. apetala, M. glaucescens does not have characteristics of Chloromeles series and M. baccata var. flavescens does not belong to Baccata. There is lack of information in the literature on 5 taxa: M. odorata, M. flexilis, M. penzenskiana, M. upsaliensis and M. baccata var. flavescens. Lot of the apple trees have beautiful decorative flowers and fruits, e.g. M. hupehensis, M. toringoides, M. sylvestris from Buttstadt. The trees of 6 taxa were free from scab symptoms, e.g. M. florentina, M. fusca. The seedlings of M. sieversii appeared to be susceptible to diseases, only 2 genotypes were free from the scab symptoms.
