Diallel crossing of four winter wheat varieties /Beta, Jana, Liwilla, Modra/ was carried out. The varieties differed significantly with physical properties of the stalk, responsible for the resistance to lodging. Parent forms and F₁ and F₂ hybrids were sown in field in the spacing of 20x10 cm. In the full maturity phase physical properties of the stalk were measured. Heritability of four mechanical and three geometric properties of the stalk were estimated using the Burtons method. Heritability of force reazired for bending the stalk by 45° from vertical depended on crossing variants and varieties within wide limits /3.6-61.6%/. Low on medium values of heritability coefficients were obtained for mean rigidity of the stalk. Crossing variants considerably differed from one another with regard to heritability of the stalk elasticity modulus /14.2-62.0%/. Low heritable trait in all hybrids appeared to be the sclerenchyma elasticity estimated by the ultrasonic method /3.2-33.9%/. The stalk wall thickness heritability was low in two crossing variants and maintained at a medium level in the remaining hybrids. High or medium values of the heritability coefficient were obtained for the stalk lenght.
