In studies on the treatment of domestic and farm sewage from rural areas either low costs of building and using proposed technical solutions and high purification efficiency are to be considered. Such a solution presents the soil-vegetation field for sewage treatment designed, built and tested by the authors. As the first such sewage treatment plant in Poland it works on the basis of matter circulation closed by the soil environment. This plant excells the other known and applied in practice solutions in the effectiveness of sewage purification. Purification effciency in winter and summer periods was respectivity 93.2 and 94.2% in BOD₅ reduction, 79.1 and 94.4% in total nitrogen, 89.4 and 87.4% in total phosphorus. To obtain so high effectiveness of sewage purification the adequate conditions have to be maintained; necessary hydraulic and technical parameters, especially important at designing stage, were described in the paper. The principles of proper utilization of sewage treatment plant either in summer and winter periods were given as well. Presented sewage purification methodf is applicable for treatment of the sewage from the single farm, group of farms or whole rural settlements.
