The aim of this study was defining relationships between a five minute episode of mechanical colonic distensions (CD) of different degrees, which were provoked by the insertion of a balloon filled with 150 and/or200 ml of water (CD150 and/or CD200), and reticulo-ruminal motility changes, heart rate, respiration frequency as vegetative symptoms of the nociceptive effects. Futhermore, noting the influence of premedication by metabotropic glutamate receptor antagonist DL-AP3 i.c.v. 1 min. infusion in 3 different doses (4.0, 8.0 and 12.0 mg in toto) on the above symptoms in sheep. The experiment was carried out in 4 series using 12 female sheep, Polish Merinos with fistula of dorsal sac of the rumen, in the anoestrus period. In the first series (6 animals as a control group) the animals had a 200 ml 0.9% NaCl i.c.v. infusion. In the second series (6 animals) they had a 5 min episode of CD by insertion of a balloon filled with 150 and/or 200 ml of water (CD150 and/or CD200). In the third series of the experiment 6 animals had an i.c.v. DL-AP3 infusion in 3 different doses (4.0, 8.0 or 12.0 mg in toto), every week. In the fourth series, the animals had i.c.v. DL-AP3 infusions in 3 different doses (4.0, 8.0 or 12.0 mg in toto) ten minutes before CD. CD espisodes of five min duration provoke a very repetitive, statistically significant increase of heart rate/ min, reticulo-ruminal motility inhibition, and nociceptive symptoms intensivity, and this can be a new model for testing potential analgesic substances and drugs for small ruminants. DL-AP3 racemate, a metabotropic glutamate receptor mGluR₁ antagonist, can be an alternative drug in jejunal pain when it is provoked by colonic distension in sheep.
The study concerned observation of the behavior of Wrzosówka in xerothermic grasslands. The observations were conducted in xerothermic grasslands: 1 in the Lubuskie voivodeship and 6 - in Western Pomerania, during the period from 1 July to 30 September 2011. The tested flock consisted of 60 breeds of Wrzosówka sheep and 2 moggie goats. During the observations, particular attention was paid to the behavior of animals during grazing including: herd behavior, vital signs as well as response to various stimuli and external factors. The sheep communicated with each other through sound, the sense of smell, hearing and sight. The hierarchy, as being observed in vital signs was subordinated to goats. Goats dominated during the competition for feed, water, and the best sleeping place, at the same attacking sheep. Plant species which were consumed most often by both sheep and goats included: black locust, plum blackthorn, young shoots of grass seedlings of deciduous trees. After the last feed during the day, the herd was going slowly in a quiet place, sheltered from the wind. Older sheep formed a compact group In the middle, driving out younger animals. Goats took place next to the sheep, but did not form a compact group with them. At the presence of badger close to the fence of the grassland, sheep concentrated in a compact group, and struck the feet the soil surface. After two hours of such behavior, badger departed. The presence of a Scenthound Bavarian dog on the quarters was accepted by the sheep completely after two months of common residence.
The research conducted by the WULS Division of Horse Breeding in the Polish Konik Preservation Breeding Centre of Biebrza National Park focused on the behaviour, body condition, forage base and parasitological status of the horses. Analysis of the influence of two management systems - free-range and limited-area enclosures - on the behaviour of the horses showed that they tend to maintain a constant pattern of basic behavioural displays. Temperature was found to influence the herd’s behaviour. The factor that had the greatest impact on the horses’ body condition was the air temperature within 3 months prior to the assessment (P≤0.01). It is difficult to unequivocally assess the role of Polish Konik horses in the prevention of ecological succession. Horse foraging in the area may have a stabilizing role for purple moor-grass meadows, but mowing is necessary to maintain this ecologically valuable plant community.
