The purposes of this questionnaire study were to determine: (1) the availability of information about food product, (2) the contribution of label information to the purchase decision, and (3) the claims for the content of label information. The survey was conducted with a national sample of 1000 adults in 1994. The information available on food package was indicated by the respondents to be generally insufficient. The expiration date, price and composition were considered the most important information, and energy value the least important information for the placement on a food package. The food label was not used as an important source of nutritional information. This study shows the necessity of intensive education of the Polish society to more effective use of the label information on food packages.
