The efficiency of cronolone sponges in combination with either pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) or cloprostenol (PGF2(2α) for inducing and synchronizing the estrous cycle in Turkish Saanen does was investigated during the transition from non-breeding to breeding season. All does (n=80) were treated with 20 mg cronolone sponges for 11 days and divided into 4 equal groups. In addition, each doe received an intramuscular injection of either 1.5 ml sterile saline solution, 0.075 mg PGF2α 500 IU PMSG or 500 IU PMSG and 0.075 mg PGF2α, 24 h before the sponge removal. Cervical artificial insemination (AI) with frozen-thawed semen was performed once 16 h after the detection of the first accepted mount. The total estrous response for the first 24 ± 4 h, total estrous response within 96 h, time to onset of the induced estrus, duration of the induced estrus and pregnancy rate was found to be 75.0%, 97.5%, 31.4 ± 1.2 h, 29.3 ± 1.2 h, and 33.3%, respectively. There were significant differences between the first two groups and the last two groups in terms of the onset of induced estrus and estrous response at the first 24 ± 4 h (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the use of cronolone/PMSG was more effective than cronolone/PGF2α in the attainment of early and compact induction of estrus in Turkish Saanen does.
The paper describes the diet of territorial Spanish Imperial Eagles during the non-breeding season, comparing prey identified across different regions (Central, Western and Southern), breeding season vs non-breeding season, and periods (1983-1985 or pre-viral haemorrhagic disease [RHD] vs 1991-2000 or post-RHD). Comparison of the nonbreeding with the breeding season revealed a slight variation in the diet. The Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus continues to be the most important prey species in the eagle's diet during the non-breeding season, followed by pigeons and the Red Partridge Aledoris rufa, although this varies from one region to another. In general, the decrease in the rabbit population after the epizooty (RHD) does not appear to have had an impact on the occurrence of this prey species in the Spanish Imperial Eagle's diet. Although this species is generally considered to be specialised in the capture of rabbits, the variability found between regions suggests that when the main prey (wild Rabbit) is scarce, the Spanish Imperial Eagle's diet is based on alternative prey such as pigeons or carrion.
The aims of this study were to compare two methods of estrus synchronization and to evaluate the effectiveness of the PMSG treatment combined with P4 application. Fifty non-lactating seasonal anestrus fat-tailed ewes were randomly assigned into five groups. The controlled internal drug release devices (CIDR) were applied during day 14 in group I and in group II. Progesterone impregnated sponges were applied during day 14 in group III and in group IV. And then 500 IU PMSG was injected in group I and III i.m. intravaginal devices removed. Ewes in group V served as controls. There was no difference between the groups in the peak value of LH and LH surge. Although LH surge was seen in the control groups 5 sheep, none of the control ewes expressed estrus. Different progestagen treatments have no different results when they are evaluated in terms of the success of the estrus synchronization. PMSG application, after P4 treatment, increased the success of the synchronization.
