To investigate whether the sampling theorem was fulfilled up to now in experimental and clinical EEG-mapping of neonates and to determine the „smearing effect” of EEG transmission by the leading media up to the skin, EEG-maps from 5 slightly anaesthetized term newborn piglets and 8 healthy human newborns were calculated. A spatial sampling rate of 1-2 cycles per cm is necessary for a sufficient reproduction of surface EEG topology in newborn piglets showing activity maxima within motor projection zones. In human neonates, 8-channel mapping gave insufficient results, whereas state and EEG pattern related 16-channel maps provided sufficiently constant, but not complete pattern. Simultaneous maps from epidural and epiossal, and epiossal, and surface recordings in newborn piglets showed only small „smearing” effects. We conclude, the more topical interpretation chances exist, like in neonates with smaller „smearing” effects of transmission media, the more complete uptake of original data for mapping is necessary. Up to now, it is done seldomly.
Cadmium levels in cord blood (CdB) of 40 neonates living in the town of Chorzów (Upper Silesia) have been determined. The mean CdB concentration was 0.439 μg/dl (SD=0.185). Smoking before and during pregnancy raised CdB levels in newborns. Mean Cd concentration in the neonates born to smoking mothers was 0.504 versus 0.353 μg/dl in those of woman who did not smoke during pregnancy.
The study aimed to analyse the clinical courses of aggressively treated neonates with cytogenetically confirmed trisomy 18, with special attention focused on the efficiency of prenatal diagnostics, associated malformations, therapeutic dilemmas and outcomes. We investigated retrospectively the data concerning 20 neonates with trisomy 18, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Katowice between January 2000 and February 2005. Their birth weights ranged from 650 g to 2400 g, mean 1812 g; gestational age ranged from 27 to 42 weeks, median 38 weeks. Intrauterine growth retardation was noticed in 90% of neonates. Trisomy 18 was suspected prenatally in 40% of cases. Most (80%) of newborns were delivered by caesarean section (92% of neonates with prenatally unrecognized chromosomal defects, 62% of neonates with trisomy 18 suspicion) and 70% of infants needed respiratory support immediately after birth. Cardiac defects were present in 95%, central nervous system malformations in 65%, severe anomalies of digestive system or abdominal wall in 25% of patients. Nine surgical operations were performed during hospitalization (4 were palliative cardiac surgeries). Six patients (30%) survived the neonatal period and were discharged from the NICU. The median survival of the neonates who died was 20 days. In 4 cases cardiac problems implicated their death; in others, deaths were attributed to multiorgan failure, prematurity and/or infection. Further improvement of efficiency of prenatal ultrasound screening for diagnosis of trisomy 18 in the fetus is necessary. A lack of prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 18 in the fetus results in a high rate of unnecessary caesarean sections in these pregnancies. Despite the aggressive treatment most neonates with trisomy 18 died during the neonatal period. The majority of deaths were attributed to cardiorespiratory and multiorgan failure. Concerning the poor prognosis, prompt karyotyping (using FISH) of clinically suspected trisomy 18 is very important, because many invasive procedures and surgeries may then be avoided.
Aim of study. To find correlation between the umbilical serum cord magnesium concentration in a group of newborns without antenatal exposition to magnesium sulphate and the neonatal outcome as well as to compare the neonatal outcome of babies with maternal magnesium sulphate treatment. Results. In a group of 82 newborns (31-34 GA; birth body weight <1500 g) the umbilical cord serum magnesium concentrations was assayed. Three subgroups of neonates were set apart: first group (N) with a normal magnesium level (n=28), the second group (n=19) with magnesium concentration <0.75 mmol/dl (D), and the third group (Mg) consisting of 35 newborn antenatally exposed to magnesium sulphate. These groups were similar (no statistical significances) in terms of birth body weight, gestational age, Apgar score and umbilical blood pH. Gradual decrease in magnesium concentration in relation to increase of gestational age was observed. In groups: D, N, Mg, gradual reduction of hospitalization time (p<0.05), risk of death, time of respiratory support, time of oxygen therapy, rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, periventricular leucomalation (p<0.05) were observed respectively. Likewise, a rate of serious neurological complication (IVH/ PVL) in group D was higher in comparison to groups N and Mg (although without statistical sig-nificances). Conclusion. Our results confirm that umbilical cord magnesium concentration in VLBW neonates have an influence on neonatal outcome. Although it is premature to recommend ordering maternal magnesium sulphate treatment to improve neonatal outcome, in our opinion the data presented here should at least induce magnesium concentration monitoring in pregnant women and magnesium deficiency correction.

Control of development of gastrointestinal system in neonates

Our recent studies of structure and function of gastrointestinal tract mucosa revealed that the domestification of Sus scrofa corresponds with the significant slowing of the organ development. On top of genetic potential, the nutritional factors (or more precisely - lack of certain biologically active substances in the feed of pregnant sows) are responsible. Moreover, feeding neonates with milk replacers instead of mother's milk further slows down the development. This is manifested by reduced mitotic activity in the crypts and enhanced apoptosis of enterocytes. The negative effects consist of slower replacement of fetal type, vacuolated enterocytes to adult type enterocytes, modified profile of brush border enzymes, alterations in intestinal mucosa barrier, higher susceptibility to infectious agents, and many others. On the other hand, farmers in order to intensify the production, shorten the suckling period imposing the neonatal piglets to be weaned at 3-4 weeks of life and even earlier. Altogether, it makes the weaning disorders one of the most important problems in pig husbandry, and the mortality of piglets in the leading pig-producing countries still reaches 10%. A number of strategies have been developed to counteract the post-weaning problems. One of them is to stimulate the development of the gastrointestinal tract of the neonate by supplementation of the sow diet with certain biologically active substances and plants. The other idea is to speed up the postnatal development of the gut mucosa for example by plant lectins. Lessons from pig studies can be also useful in human nutrition and medicine since the development of porcine gastrointestinal tract shows a great similarity to that of humans.
The preparations, stained according to the Nissl and Klüver-Barrera methods, were used to describe the topography and morphology of the red nucleus (RN) as well as the structure of the rubral perikarya in newborn (P0) guinea pigs. The Golgi impregnated preparations were used to distinguish types of neurons. RN is a uniform cell group and has the length from 740 to 860 µm. The Nissl stained perikarya were classified into three categories: big, medium-sized and small (A, B, C, respectively). The big perikarya, which contain a lot of tigroidal substance, were mainly observed at the caudal and ventral portions of RN. The small perikarya often have multiple nucleoli. The impregnated neurons were classified into 5 types: 1 — large, aspiny, rich-arborised multipolar cells, 2 — large and medium sized, spiny, rich-arborised fusiform or pear-shaped cells, 3 — medium-sized, spiny, rich-arborised rounded cells, 4 — medium-sized, spiny, richarborised bipolar cells, 5 — small and single medium-sized cells. The 5th type constitutes a heterogeneous population and also has neurons in different developmental stages. Intraspecies variations concerning both the length of RN and a number of the triangular perikarya of the red nucleus were observed in the examined guinea pigs.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have become the most often isolated bacteria from blood culture, spinal fluid and respiratory tracts of neonates. These nosocomial strains are often resistant to oxacillin and other antibiotics (macrolides, aminoglycosides and fluorochinolones). 50 multidrug resistant CoNS strains isolated from bloodstream neonatal infections were tested for sensitivity to 23 lytic staphylococcus bacteriophages. No lytic patterns for 19 of the phages were observed. Phages P4, A3R and 676/Z were active against 46%, 54% and 56% of the strains, respectively. In general, 60% of CoNS isolates were susceptible to one or more of the staphylococcus bacteriophages.

Ghrelin in the postnatal development of the gastrointestinal tract

Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide first isolated from rat and human stomachs. Together with the recently discovered 23-amino acid obestatin, it is derived from proghrelin by posttranslational processing. Cells immunoreactive to ghrelin are widely distributed in the gastric mucosa in domestic and laboratory animals and in humans. Ghrelin plays an important role in energy homeostasis, body weight control, and food intake, whereas obestatin seems to induce the opposite effects. Ghrelin and ghrelin receptor expression have been found in developing gastrointestinal foetal and neonatal tissues, and substantial amounts of ghrelin are present in colostrum, thereby suggesting its presumable role in perinatal development. Ghrelin was shown to positively influence weight gain, increase GH, insulin and cortisol secretion. It also stimulates gastrointestinal tissue structure and function development in weaned animals. Surprisingly, responses in suckling neonates were found to be opposite to those in weanlings. Ghrelin retarded gastric, intestinal and pancreatic development and showed a tendency to reduce body weight gain. Recent studies suggest that the biphasic effect of ghrelin in young rats on pancreas and stomach growth seems to be related to age-dependent changes of the release of anabolic IGF-1. In the perinatal period, obestatin is detected in the rat stomach, pancreas and blood plasma. The obestatin concentration in rats is abruptly reduced after birth, contrasting with an increase in the concentration of acylated ghrelin. Further progressive reduction in pancreas obestatin is observed until weaning.
Feeding of neonates with artificial milk formulas delays the maturation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Na-butyrate has a complex trophic effect on the gastrointestinal epithelium in adults. The present study aimed to determine the effect of milk formula supplementation with Na-butyrate on the gut mucosa in neonatal piglets. Sixteen 3 day old piglets were randomly divided into two groups: control (C, n = 8), and Na-butyrate (B, n = 8). Animals were feed for 7 days with artificial milk formula alone (C) or supplemented with Na-butyrate (B). At the 10th day of life the piglets were sacrificed and whole thickness samples of the upper gut were taken for analyses. Administration of Na-butyrate led to significant increase in daily body weight gain as compared to control. In the duodenum, the villi length and mucosa thickness were reduced, however, in the distal jejunum and ileum, the crypt depth, villi length and mucosa thickness were increased in Na-butyrate supplemented piglets as compared to control. Supplementation with Na-butyrate did not affect the intestinal brush border enzyme activities but increased plasma pancreatic polypeptide and cholecystokinin concentrations. These results suggest that supplementation with Na-butyrate may enhance the development of jejunal and ileal mucosa in formula-fed piglets.
Finds of juvenile parareptiles are rare in the fossil record. We describe partial upper dentition with large vacuities between bones belonging to a neonate pareiasaur (preserved skull fragment is 22.4 mm long). The specimen was collected within 5 m from a skeleton of an adult specimen of Deltavjatia vjatkensis (Hartmann-Weinberg, 1937) (Pareiasauridae) from red calcareous mudstones in the upper part of the Vanyushonkov Member of Ursulov Formation (Upper Permian, Upper Tatarian substage, Vishkil'skiy regional stage) of Kotel'nich locality, Vyatka River region, Russia. Referral to Deltavjatia vjatkensis is based on the presence of heterodont dentition: spatulate maxillary, triconodont vomerine and conical, palatine and pterygoid teeth located on well-developed palate ridges. This is the first positively identified record of the neonate pareiasaur dentition.
