The aim of the paper was to examine the economic conditions of plant protection in the north-eastern Poland, the microregion of Reszel and Mrągowo, in the years 1991-1993. The research concerned individual farms, covering the largest areas of land, where production is to be conducted in a conventional way during several next years. They were chosen due to the fact that their production scale and obtained yield make it necessary to apply effective - from the economic perspective - ways of plant protection. Achievement and realization of the set goal was possible in the case of analysed farms thanks to examining and learning about the forms and methods of fighting against agrophages. The active substance use arid kinds of applied plant protection chemicals were subject to investigation. The frequency of protection measures was determined as well. The expenditures and costs concerning plant protection on farms were analysed. Total costs of protection measures were divided into costs of chemicals and costs of their application. Moreover, the efficiency of employed protection ways was established for main cultivated plants. The conducted research showed that the amounts of plant protection chemicals used per ha of arable land were equal to 1.340, 0.934 and 0.624kg. They turned out to be much higher than the average pesticide consumption in Poland, but at the same time they considerably differ from those applied in highly developed countries. The costs of plant protection on farms were balanced by the value of obtained yield which, in the case of wheat, did not exceed 10%.
