Tolerance of several strains of the P-, S-, and F- intersterility groups of Heterobasidion annosum to low pH and high concentration of aluminium ions was studied on malt extract agar. There were marked intraspecific, but not intergroup, variations in tolerance to both factors. Some strains were relatively tolerant or sensitive to low pH and aluminium, while the others were tolerant to low pH but sensitive to Al. There was no relationship between tolerance of the strains to low pH and their tolerance to aluminium stress.
It is possible to obtain malt beverage, which includes high number of viable lactic acid bacteria and has a good sensor quality for eight weeks of storage at the temperature of 22°C. L. plantarum ATCC 4080 strain after four weeks of storage did not reveal antagonistic activity against spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. This strain after two, six and eight weeks of storage had antagonistic properties. The tested strain after two and four weeks of storage did not survive during incubation at pH 2.5 and next in malt beverage with 3 mmol/dm3 deoxycholate sodium, while survived in these conditions after six and eight weeks. In case of incubation at pH 2.5 and next in aqueous solution of deoxycholate sodium tested strain after four and six weeks of storage had survival ability. The survival ability in these conditions of the tested strain after two and eight weeks of storage were not investigated
An acidic condition (low pH) of the germination media promoted dormancy breakage of scarified seeds of Townsville stylo (Stylosanthes humilis H.B.K.), an annual tropical forage legume, whether produced by either an unbuffered (HCl-KOH) or a buffered (phthalate, Mcllvaine) medium. Except for aminooxyacetic acid, all ethylene biosynthesis inhibitors tested and supplied with the low pH solutions decreased germination to variable extents. Low pH-stimulated dormant seeds produced ethylene 4-fold as much than untreated seeds. Production of ethylene by seeds treated with high pH solutions, which did not affect their dormant state, was also very low.
This report presents an assessment of pyrite weathering on the chemistry of water in the abandoned Podwiśniówka quarry of the Holy Cross Mountains (south-central Poland). This quarry did not operate for ore minerals, but for quartzites. The area of the pit pond enlarges each year generally as a result of an influx of spring snowmelt or heavy rainfall. The water examined reveals a very low pH, varying from 2.27 to 3.57 (with geometric mean value of 2.90), and unusual low concentrations of cations and anions, especially total Fe (2.7–24.0 mg·L⁻¹) and SO₄²⁻ (55–285 mg·L⁻¹). With regard to its chemistry, this pond is unique compared to similar sites in Poland and even throughout the world. The low pH and element concentrations are attributed to the specific mineralogy of ore and gangue minerals, as well as complex bacterially catalyzed geochemical processes that have encompassed pyrite oxidation and iron oxidation/hydrolysis reactions.
