In the presented investigations contents of selected microelements were determined in soil and meadow sward of static fertilizer experiment at Czarny Potok near Krynica. The experiment set up in 1968 on the natural mountain meadow comprises 8 fertilizer objects. The studies presented in the work concern 36thyear of the experiment. B, Mn, Zn, Fe, Cu and Co were determined in the 0-10 cm soil. Soil microelement forms soluble in 1 mol HCl dm⁻³ and acidification indices were assessed. Long-term mineral fertilization had a significant effect on the contents of microelements in the soil of the permanent meadow and these changes were multidirectional. Diversification in the contents of microelements resulted from unilateral fertilization with phosphorus, acidifying effect of fertilizers and from liming which blocked solubility of microelements in the soil. The contents of most microelements in the soil of mountain meadow fertilized with mineral fertilizers for many years were considered as medium with the exception of boron which content oscillated between the low and medium. This justifies the necessity of boron fertilization.
Polish agriculture, as distinct from the European one, has struggled with the problem of excessive soil acidification for many years. Thus, in times of strong competition on the agricultural market it is important to look for efficient and also cheap methods to ensure an improvement of acidity of Polish soils. The aim of the present study was to determine if the negative effects of acidification were of a durable nature and if these effects could be removed by single applications of relatively small doses of lime. This aim was achieved based on soil material from a long-term fertilizing experiment situated in Łyczyn, central Poland. This experiment comprises of fertilizing treatments constituting all combinations of basic nutrients used in fertilization N, P, K, Ca in only mineral fertilization system and in the system of mineral fertilization with farmyard manure (FYM). The experiment was carried out on the grey-brown podzolic soil. The chosen experimental objects were not limed since 1960 and the yields grown on these treatments were very low. As a result of a single liming, significant increase of potato, spring barley and rye yield was observed. The soil pH increase resulted in statistically proven growth of available and active phospohrus, which is evidence of the soil reserve phosphorus activation. The study results indicate that it is very easy to disturb the ion balance of sandy soil and thus reduce its productivity in unstable nutrient management conditions. On the other hand, it is possible to restore the productive value of soil with little financial input.
The paper discusses fluctuations, and their underlying causes, in the magnesium content of meadow sward from a fertilizer experiment set up on a mountain meadow in 1968. The fertilization experiment comprised 8 different treatments, with the following modifications: liming, magnesium and microelement fertilization and a change in the sward use made during the experiment so as to regenerate the sward and to improve the yielding potential. In the initial period, magnesium concentrations in the sward were assessed using the ASS technique after dry mineralization of samples and dissolution of the residue in diluted nitric acid. Later, the ICP technique was applied, including an internal reference sample for the methods. The cultivation measures caused variations in magnesium concentrations in the sward, depending on a number of factors, among which direct fertilization was not the most significant one. For example, the ambient temperature during the plant growing season strongly influenced the magnesium content, irrespectively of a cut. There was no effect of rainfall of the magnesium content, although atmospheric precipitation was able to raise considerably the charge of this element. In the second cut and under neutral soil pH, higher concentrations of magnesium were noted in the sward. This could have resulted from either the lower second swath yielding or the optimum conditions for the uptake of magnesium by the sward that occurred during its growth. The investigation results failed to provide an unambiguous answer to the question whether magnesium fertilization affected the concentrations of this element. Nonetheless, in order to maintain the production of valuable fodder it is essential to return systematically the elements taken up with plant yield to the soil. In intensively managed meadows, amounts of magnesium removed from the soil with the harvested biomass can be as high as several kilograms per hectare.
