There is a paucity of information in the literature regarding the quadrate ligament and the information that does exist is extremely conflicting. We dissected 30 cadavers (60 sides) to determine the morphology and function of this enigmatic ligament. A quadrate ligament (thickening of the elbow joint capsule) was found in all specimens. In all specimens this band was distinct from the circumferential fibres of the annular ligament. The length, width, and thickness of the quadrate ligament were found to be 11 mm, 8 mm, and 1 mm respectively. This ligament not only aided in securing the neck of the radius to the ulna but also resisted excessive supination and, to a lesser degree, pronation of the forearm. Following transection of the quadrate ligament, the head of the radius was secured to the ulna considerably less firmly and supination and pronation increased by 10 to 20 degrees and 5 to 8 degrees respectively. The quadrate ligament contributes to proximal radioulnar stability, limits the “spin” of this joint, and should be considered in manipulation, surgery, or imaging of the proximal forearm.
Background. The injury to medial meniscotibial ligament (MTL) is a cause of pain in the medial articulatio genus which is rarely discussed in the literature. The paper examines the effectiveness of deep transverse friction massage (DTFM) in the treatment of injury to the medial meniscus-tibial ligament in a female football player. Material and methods. A case study concerned a patient ( 22 years old) who is a football player on the position of striker. She has been complaining about the pain in the right, medial articulatio genus for five days. Deep transverse friction massage (DTFM) was applied in the treatment. A total of 9 procedures was conducted (3 times a week) throughout three weeks. The first DTFM session lasted 2 minutes and the time was systematically extended during further sessions until it reached 15 minutes. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), modified Laitinen Pain Questionnaire and countermovement jump test (CMJ) on the dynamometric platform were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Results. Having completed the treatment, a decrease of pain measured by the means of VAS and Laitinen Pain Questionnaire was reported. There was also improvement in limb symmetry index in all phases of the test carried out on the dynamometric platform. Conclusions. The results demonstrate that DTFM may be an effective method of treatment for MTL injuries. Conducting further research on a bigger study group is necessary.

Collagens are major structural proteins of tendons, ligaments and other components of musculoskeletal tissues. Rare mutations in many of the genes, which encode for the collagen !-chains, result in serious musculoskeletal disorders, highlighting the importance of this protein family in the normal structure and function of musculoskeletal tissues. Since these rare mutations cause severe disorders, it has been proposed that a lack of biological redundancy exists within the collagen fibril, and that collagen-encoding genes are therefore ideal candidates for association with less severe exercise-related traits. This review identifies a number of collagen gene variants which are associated with various exercise-related traits. Based on the evidence outlined in this review, we propose that a general genetic continuum exists for collagen genes and their associated traits. At one end of this general continuum model, a single mutation within one or more collagen genes will result in severe Mendelian disorders. At the other end of the continuum, functional variants within these collagen genes collectively contribute to the aetiology of anomalous multifactorial connective tissue traits, which arise as a result of the interaction of genetic and non-genetic factors which modulate physiological responses to environmental stimuli.
