The investigations were carried out on seventy five bulls of Black and White Breed and forty six bulls of Red and White Breed used for procreation in the years 1977-1985 in the Animal Breeding and Insemination Centre in Karczów. All ejaculates produced by individual bulls during the first three years were examined. There were 33103 ejaculate features of both bull breeds analysed. The following features were examined: total quantity of semen, number of ejaculates, mean volume of ejaculate, spermatozoon concentration, their survival rate and translatory motion. On the basi s of the investigations it wae stated that the kind of breed had no effect on either quality or quantity of the semen. However, lower values of analysed features were observed in bulls of Black and White Breed. On the other hand the number of ejaculates, total quantity of semen and volume of ejaculate increased from year to year in bulls of both breeds. In the third year of using the bulls for procreation increase of the following was stated: spermatozoon concentration, percentage of sperm in translatory motion and their survival rate. However, this increase was not statistically significant.
An average number of ejaculates and ejaculate volumes, total yearly ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, percentage of sperm with progressive motion, survival rate of sperm and total number of semen doses obtained from 126 bulls /51 Lowland Red-White and 75 Lowland Black-White/ were examined in the first and the second year of bulls' reproduction performance. We studled 24603 ejaculates in 1976-1985. The bulls were divided into 4 groups according to the season beginning their performance: I group - March-May, II group - June-August, III group - Sept.-Nov., IV group - Dec-Febr. In Lowland Red-White bulls, in the first year of their performance, we observed highly significant concentration of sperm in group IV compared with that in groups II and III and significantly lower concentration compared with that in group I. The percentage of spermatozoons with progressive motion was significantly lower in groups II and III. In the sperm of Lowland Black-White bulls, in the second year of their performance, bigger, number of ejaculates and higher total ejaculate volume were noticed in group I compared with these in group II. Sperm concentration was significantly higher in group III than that in group IV. The percentage of the sperm with progressive motion was significantly higher in group II than that in group I and significantly higher in group II than in groups I and IV. No effect of the season beginning the reproduction performance on the total quantity of semen was found in the breeds studied.
