The intense development of tourism has contributed to popularity of postcards, and so to their huge print volumes. This method of correspondence was launched by Austro-Hungarian mail in 1869. The postcards with an illustration on one side and space for a message on the other became a common means of sending greetings from when traveling. Tourist, landscape and natural motifs are very popular subjects of postcard illustrations. It is successfully used by environmental institutions publishing maps of protected areas on postcards.
