Honeyberry’s popularity has been increasing because of its valuable traits: nutritional value of fruits (a high amount of ascorbic acid, potassium and polyphenolic compounds), early ripening (14 days before strawberry), exceptional hardiness and easy cultivation. However, there is still little known about the pollination biology of this species, which is essential for practical breeding purposes. In this study we evaluated pollen fertility in five cultivars and three breeding clones of this species. The impact of the manner of pollination on the fruit set and forming seeds has also been studied. The highest percentage of viable pollen was found in cultivars ‘Duet’ and ‘Wojtek’ (96%), whereas the pollen of ‘Chelyabinka’ cultivar had the lowest fertility (90%). The percentage of blue honeysuckle fruits obtained from open-pollinated flowers was high (on average 94.7%) compared to isolated flowers (on average 8.6%). The effect of cross-pollination with cv. ‘Duet’ indicates that the percentage of the fruit set, fruit weight and mass of produced seeds was higher when this cultivar was applied as maternal than paternal form. The number of seeds affected significantly the weight of the fruit in the case when cv. ’Duet’ was used as a paternal (correlation coefficient r = 0.45) or maternal form (r = 0.66), while for other methods of pollination this effect was insignificant. These results may be used to the most efficient establishment of plantations as well as for the realization of the breeding program of this valuable species.
Plants of honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium L.) from commercial nursery, showing stunted growth and severe leaf and flower malformation were found to be naturally infected with Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The virus was identified on the basis of its host range and in vitro and serological properties. It was mechanically transmitted onto therteen herbaceous test plants and induced local or local and systemic symptoms. The isolated virus had a TIP of 65–70°C, a LIV of 4–5 h and DEP of 10⁻⁴–10⁻⁵. It reacted positively in DAS-ELISA with CMV-ToRS (II) commercial antibodies but not with antibodies against CMV-DTL (I). Rabbit antiserum was produced, and it showed the titre at least 128 000 in F(ab’)₂ -ELISA with homologous isolate, as well as with isolate CMV-M belonging to serogroup DTL.
The aim of the study was to compare the polyphenolic composition of extracts from different plant sources. Extracts from two new plants rich in polyphenols, i.e. chokeberries and honeysuckle, were compared with the well-investigated green tea polyphenols. All extracts obtained were characterised by a high content of polyphenols: green tea – 611 mg/g, honeysuckle – 633 mg/g and chokeberries – 714 mg/g. Honeysuckle and chokeberries extracts consisted mainly of anthocyanins (321.2 and 404.5 mg/g, respectively), whereas green tea extract contained mainly flavan-3-ols (587.9 mg/ g).
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki prowadzonej ex situ ochrony wiciokrzewu pomorskiego Lonicera periclymenum. W badaniach określono udatność przyjęć, wzrost roślin i wybrane parametry fizjologiczne przesadzonych roślin. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na celowość prowadzenia ochrony wiciokrzewu takimi metodami, również w innych zespołach leśnych.
