Epidemiological studies have suggested associations between polyphenol-rich food consumption and the prevention of diseases. Currently, there is much interest in the health- fulness of citrus fruits because their intake appears to be associated with reduced risk of certain chronic diseases. In the paper a review of recent studies on antioxidant activity and physiological effect of grapefruit flavonoides has been conducted. Antioxidant activity of grapefruit extract has been studied in vitro and in vivo. It has been found that grapefruit compounds demonstrate good antioxidant potential, inhibit superoxide formation, show strong scavenging activity and anti-apoptopic activity. Results showed that hesperidin and naringin as well as their aglycones hesperedin and naringenin are mainly responsible for antioxidative activity of grapefruit extract and grapefruit juice. Citrus flavonoids became subjects of great concern with discovery of these compounds effects on capillary function. Research has also shown that citrus flavonoids and their metabolites are potent antioxidants. Thus, they are able to suppress many cases of cancer and inflammation involving reactive oxygen species. Recently published results concerning grapefruit potential in humans show that diet supplemented with red grapefruit positively influences serum lipid levels of all fractions, especially serum triglycerides as well as serum antioxidant activity.
