W artykule przedstawiono najpierw historię idei oraz istotę i przejawy gospodarki obiegu zamkniętego, a także jej wyższy etap tzw. lepszego wykonawstwa. Następnie objaśniono powiązania tej idei z realizowaną już od ponad 30 lat koncepcją rozwoju zrównoważonego i trwałego oraz cztery zasady trwałości rozwoju. Na koniec zaprezentowano możliwości wdrożenia modelu gospodarki obiegu zamkniętego w praktyce gospodarczej, a także w życiu społecznym, z przykładami z USA, Europy zachodniej i Polski.
