Our paper deals with the balance of chlorine in coal combustion and flue gas desulfurization based on measurement results acquired at two different boilers of the CEZ thermal power plant in Melnik, Czech Republic. In bottom ash and electrostatic ash 30–35% of chlorine remains and more than 60% chlorine enters flue gas desulfurization. Almost all chlorine in flue gas entering flue gas desulfurization is removed from 90% in limestone scrubbers. Only up to 8% of chlorine content leaving the scrubbers is emitted to ambient air.
Trace metal composition of snowpack, snow-melt filter residues and top-soils were determined along transects through industrial towns in the Usa River Basin: Inta, Usinsk and Vorkuta. Elevated concentrations of deposition elements and pH in snow and soils associated with alkaline coal ash within 25-40 km of Vorkuta and Inta were found. Atmospheric deposition in the vicinity of Vorkuta and Inta, added significantly to the soil contaminant loading as a result of ash fallout. The element concentrations in soils within 20-30 km of Vorkuta do not reflect current deposition rates, but instead, reflect an historical pollution legacy, when coal mining activity peaked in the 1960s. There is little evidence of anthropogenic metal deposition around the gas and oil town of Usinsk.
The aim of this work was to present the mineral composition of ashes which were the result of burning coal in individual home furnaces in the area of Piekary Śląskie. Ashes samples were examined by X-ray powder diffraction and analytical scanning electron microscopy. Main components of the ash particles is aluminosilicate glaze containing such elements as iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, copper, lead, nickel, phosphorus, titanium, barium and sulphur. Solid waste as ashes, which were the result of the process of burning coal in individual home furnaces can be characterized by the majority of particles of the size not larger than several micrometers. These particles have mostly irregular or spherical shapes. The knowledge of phase composition of the examined waste has a great significance while estimating their influence on environment, especially when considering storage of ashes with community waste.
