In the field experiment conducted in 2004—2005 the effect of form and rate of nitrogen on chemical composition and antioxidant activity of calendula flowers was estimated. Plants fertilized with urea had the highest level of phenolic compounds in flowers. The highest level of total carotenoids was noticed in flowers from plots fertilized with nitrate form of nitrogen and the lowest when the source of nitrogen was ammonium sulphate. In treatments fertilized with nitrate N form the level of chlorophyll was the highest and in another treatments lower and rather similar. Among the tested forms of nitrogen a higher antioxidant activity assured urea and ammonium sulphate in both FRAP and ABTS method. The antioxidant activity was highest in treatment fertilized with nitrogen in dose of 100 kg N-ha1.
