Twenty years of the Lowland European bison Bison bonasus bonasus conservation in captivity. The aim of the work was to track back changes taking place in the Lowland European bison population kept in captivity in years 1995-2015. The material for the study was data from European Bison Pedigree Book, collected from the years 1924-2015. The parameters such as inbreeding coefficient, kinship coefficient, contribution of founder genes and completeness of pedigree information were analyzed as well as the demographic structure of the population. Over the past 20 years, a steady increase in the population size has been observed. The share of different countries in Lowland wisent breeding also changed. The study showed that the accuracy of pedigree information decreased significantly between 1995 and 2015. In 1995 169 from 342 animals living in captivity had full pedigree information. In 2005 it was 76 from 320 animals. Within the population being alive in 2015, only 62 form 577 (10%) of all animals from Lowland line have full pedigree information, that leads to the founders of the population. An increase in the average values of inbreeding coefficient in the population and mean kinship was also observed.
This study was conducted to identify the differences and similarities among three Japanese quail (JQ) lines (JQ lines: white, brown and wild-black) and the European quail (EQ). The qRT-PCR was used to determine the expression of growth related genes: growth hormone (GH) and Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), immune genes (Interleukins 1β, IL-1β, Interferon-α, IFN-α), pigmentation genes; dopachrome tautomerase, (Dct) and endothelin receptor type B2, (EdnrB2) in several quail tissues, while PCR-RFLP analysis of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene was conducted in quail meat. Expression levels of the pigmentation related genes (Dct and EdnrB2) were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the JQBr and EQ lines than in JQwh and they were comparable between JQbr and wild EQ. Expression levels of the growth related genes (GH and IGF-1) were significantly higher in 3 JQ lines than in EQ. No differences between all 4 quail lines were found in the expression of the immune related genes. In conclusion, the PCR-RFLP method may be used to distinguish between the Japanese and the European quail, which is important for breeding programs, labeling meat products and biodiversity studies.
Conservation breed/line laying hens: Greenleg Partridge (Z-11), Yellowleg Partridge (Ż-33), Rhode Island Red (R-11), Sussex (S-66) and Leghorn (H-22 and G-99), 360 per strain were divided into 2 equal feeding treatment groups. Control groups (C) were fed a standard complete diet, experimental groups (L) were fed a diet with 10% linseed. The experiment was conducted from 37 to 52 weeks of age. Hatching efficiency was examined using 150 eggs per group. Laying rate and hatching efficiency differed between breed/strains, but increased due to incorporation of linseed into the diet. At 52 weeks of age, 4 eggs were randomly selected from each treatment group and yolks were analysed for fatty acid profile and cholesterol content. There was an increase in n-3 PUFA, including α-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, and a decrease in the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in all groups receiving the linseed diet. It can be concluded that the use of linseed in diets of conservation breed/line hens results in table eggs with functional food properties and improves hatching efficiency in breeding stocks
