Sixty pearl grey guinea fowl were investigated. Birds were kept in a closed facility without regard to sex. For the first three weeks, guinea fowl were kept in boxes on plastic mesh floor, and then in straw-bedded pens. They were fed commercial mash diets for turkeys or hens. At the end of 13 and 52 weeks of age, body weight was determined and birds selected for slaughter were subjected to body measurements. As guinea fowl aged, their body weight and body dimensions increased except for lower leg length in males. Compared to 13-week-old males, males aged 52 weeks had significantly higher body weight and highly significantly higher sternum length and chest circumference. As females aged, their body weight, lower leg length and chest circumference increased highly significantly, and sternum length and shank length increased significantly. Males compared to females were characterized by lower body weight at both evaluation times, and by significantly shorter lower leg at 52 weeks of age. The body conformation indices of massiveness, compactness and long-leggedness were higher in older birds.
In a group of purebred Arab mares the level of inbreeding and its effect on three body conformation traits was determined. Moreover, estimated were heritability coefficients of the traits and their phenotypic, genetic and environmental trends. Considered were conformation records of 706 Arab mares born in the years 1936- 1993. The mean inbreeding level of mares was 0.88%. No considerable effect of inbred rate on body conformation traits was found. The obtained partial regression coefficients were close to zero. Heritability coefficients appeared low and amounted to 0.160 (±0.078) for height at withers, 0.052 (±0.067) for chest circumference and 0.050 (±0.054) for circumference of cannon.Negligible positive genetic trend was observed for all the traits studied, whereas the environmental trends were not clear.
Over the last 50 years the traits of valuable indigenous Lithuanian Žemaitukai horse have not been investigated and during the last decade the breed became on the verge of extinction. Recently certain measures were undertaken to preserve the breed, evaluate its present characteristics and compare them with those reported earlier. Body size and conformation traits of present-day Žemaitukai horse (ŽH) were found corresponding or similar to those of the ancient type, showing that many valuable characteristics of the breed are retained. Mares’ milk yield and composition were evaluated, as well as development of foals based on body dimensions. Genetic variation, genetic structure as well as relationship between the lines and families of ŽH were studied using blood typing and electrophoretic analysis of serum proteins. Gene frequencies are presented at six blood group (A, D, C, Q, P, K) and five protein ( Al, Es, Gc, Xk, Tf) loci. The genetic diversity within blood groups and serum proteins in ŽH kept in a closed population showed that out of eleven genetic systems examined, six were polymorphic. This is especially so for the A and D, as well as Es and Tf systems. The distribution of allele frequencies varied between the lines and families.
The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability (h2) of body condition score (BCS), body conformation (type) and production traits of Black-and-White cows maintained by small farmers of Eastern Poland as well as genetic (rG) and phenotypic (rP) correlations between the traits mentioned. Considered were 2012 cows with completed 305-day lactation from the years 1997-1999.The h2 estimate for BCS was 0.37. Out of 26 condition and conformation traits considered, the rP of 17 and rG of 13 traits appeared negative. The rG values ranged from -0.30 (musculature) to 0.45 (udder).
