The paper presents an assessment of the state of water pollution of the Dzierzgoń Lake based on bacteriological indicators. Water samples were taken at two measurement points in four study periods in July and August 2011 and 2012. A total number of psychrophilic bacteria and MPN of faecal coliforms were determined. In addition, selected chemical parameters of water quality were analyzed, including total organic carbon and total nitrogen. The results were compared with those obtained by the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection in 1998 and 2004, and by Rychlik in 2009. It can be concluded that the sanitary condition of the Dzierzgoń Lake is satisfactory.
The aim of the studies carried out in the year 2000 was evaluation of Mean Trophic Rank (MTR) method for water trophy assessment in the Kujawskie Lakeland and estimation of necessary changes in list of bioindicators. During researches results from MTR were compared with Chemical Index of Trophy (CIT) created for conditions of the Kujawskie Lakeland. Obtained results were very promising and both methods could be used in this region in the future.
Long-term limnological monitoring data (from 1971 to 2001) and the documented human load history were compared with sediment core record in a small lake Ruusmäe in southern Estonia. It was established that pollen data reflect the main land-use changes on the catchment rather adequately. The response of other palaeoecological indicators (fossil pigments, carbon and nitrogen, phosphorous) and diatom composition to the changes in the nutrient input from the nearby large cattle-breeding centre took some time. When the load had exceeded certain limit, the transition of the lake from eutrophic to hypertrophic state took place very quickly. Simultaneously with the reorganisation of matter cycling rapid changes occurred in the diatom community, in which species characteristic of hypertrophic lakes became dominant. Irrespective of the drastic drop in the external load at the beginning of the 1990s the changes in the biogeochemical matter cycling and diatom community are modest.
Zoographical distribution of metazoan fish parasites in herring, Clupea harengus, from the Baltic Sea was analysed in order to use them as potential biological indicators. A total of 210 herring from six different sampling sites were investigated, harbouring 12 different parasite species [five digeneans (D), one cestode (C), three nematodes (N) and three acanthocephalans (A)]. The distribution of the parasite species differed according to region, with a distinct gradient of decreasing species richness towards the east of the Baltic Sea. The western localities at Kiel Bay, Rügen and Poland had the highest parasite diversity, including the marine parasite species Anisakis simplex (s.s.) (N), Brachyphallus crenatus and Hemiurus luehei (both D). The eastern localities had low parasite species richness, predominated by the freshwater digenean Diplostomum spathaceum. We could identify three different Baltic herring stocks, the spring-spawning herring of the western Baltic reaching from the Kattegat to the German and Polish coast, the stock of the central Baltic proper and the northern stock of C. harengus var. membras of the Gulf of Finland. The limited distribution of the herring parasites within the Baltic Sea enables their use as biological indicators for migration patterns and stock separation. The acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis that has already been used as an accumulation bioindicator for heavy metals was only recorded for the western herring stocks. However, the presence of mainly generalistic parasites and their uneven distribution patterns make their use as indicators for regional environmental and global change more difficult.
Objective: To study the effects of velvet antler polypeptides (VAPs) on osteoarthritic chondrocytes (OCs) in rabbits. Methods: An osteoarthritic rabbit model was established according to Hulth's method. OCs were isolated and cultured for observation of the cell cycle. Cell proliferation was detected by MTT assay and the cell cycle was monitored by flow cytometry. The phenotype was determined by toluidine blue staining as well as immunohistochemical staining for collagen type II. The expression of MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-13, TIMP-1, and collagen I and X mRNA by chondrocytes was assayed by RT-PCR. Results: The VAPs had no obvious proliferative effect on OCs and did not affect the cell cycle. However, they significantly reduced the proportion of early apoptotic cells in a dose-dependent manner. Further, VAPs inhibited the expression of collagen I and X mRNA and induced abnormal expression of MMP-1 and MMP-13 mRNA. VAPs had no significant effect on MMP-3 and TIMP-1 mRNA levels. The toluidine blue and collagen type II immunohistochemical staining intensities of VAP-treated chondrocytes were positively correlated with the concentration of VAPs used. Conclusion: VAPs had no significant effect on OC proliferation and the cell cycle, but did increase the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and collagen type II expression levels in the extracellular matrix, and down-regulated collagen I and X mRNA expression. Treatment of cartilage cells with VAPs maintained their normal phenotype, inhibited matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) secretion, kept the balance of cartilage matrix metabolism, and sustained an external environment where the cartilage cells could survive. Moreover, VAPs reduced the proportion of early apoptotic cells, suggesting that they may block the apoptotic pathway in OCs.
