Essential oil of Artemisia annua L. was investigated to find out its toxicity and physiological aspects on the slug Agriolimax agrestis, in controlled conditions (8±1°C, 75±5 RH and 14:10 LD). The slugs received different concentrations of essential oil treated radish leaves in methanol, while the control received methanol alone. LC10, LC30, LC50 and LC90 values were estimated at 4.67, 5.3, 5.81, 7.25%, respectively. The effect of the essential oil on some important enzymatic components like; cytochrome P450 monnooxygenase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lipase, amylase and protease were significantly increased compared to the control. These results indicate that the plant Artemisia annua L. not only shows toxicity but also shows some irreversible effect on some important biochemical components and deserves further investigation.
The experiment, carried out in the aquarium room of the Faculty of Marine Fisheries and Food Technology, involved 72 carp juveniles. The fish were kept in 6 aquaria for 12 weeks without food. Levels of crude protein, AspAT and AlAT activities, levels of glucose, triacylglycerols, cholesterol and its fractions as well as body weight reduction and body composition were analysed. Starvation was found to significantly affect the crude protein level and AspAT activity as well as the blood levels of glucose, triacylglycerols, cholesterol and its fraction and the body chemical composition. The significant changes occurred both in relation to the initial status of the fish and between successive stages of the experiment.
The study was made on 17 stallions of Polish Primitive Horses divided into four groups: I - control group, II - subject to LPS Escherichia coli injection in the dose of 0.05 μg/kg b.w., III - LPS in the dose of 0.1 μg/kg b.w. and IV - LPS in the dose of 0.3 μg/kg b.w. (n=5). The study was meant to determine the concentration of total protein (TPR), albumin (ALB) and aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT) in seminal plasma. Changes in the levels of all the above biochemical components in seminal plasma were noticed in stallions under endotoxin influence, especially after administration of the highest LPS dose. A statistically significant increase was noticed in TPR concentration (maximum in the 8th week), ALB concentration (maximum in the 24th hour). Changes in AspAT activity was also found with a maximum increase in the 6th week after LPS E. coli administration. The results of these studies show that endotoxemia induces changes in the biochemical properties of the seminal plasma in stallions, especially with reference to enzyme activity.
