The aim of this article is to analyze and evaluate the development of economic and ecological studies on the category of ecosystem services. Its achievement requires the analysis of the methodology of economic and environmental research with particular emphasis on systems approach and elements of the category of ecosystem services in environmental economics and ecological economics, as well as in the theories of development. In economic theory, however, the main problem concerns the lack of a clear demarcation between the categories of natural resources and ecosystem services. It is not possible to solve this problem without recognition of ecosystem services from the point of view of the theory of economics of services. It is assumed that ecosystem services constitute also one of the research areas of modern economics of services, conditioning the development of economic and ecological research in the economics of sustainable development.
