Analyses of the activity of soil enzymes provide information on the biochemical processes occurring in the soil. A pot experiment was undertaken to examine the effect of dairy plant sewage sludge with and without the addition of lignite ash on the activities of protease, urease and dehydrogenases as well as on the pH of grey-brown podzolic soil. The study demonstrated significant differences between activities of the analyzed enzymes as affected by soil fertilization with sewage sludge from a dairy plant. The activities of protease and urease appeared to be significantly stimulated by dairy sewage sludge introduced to the soil, both with and without the addition of lignite ash. On the contrary, only at the beginning of the experiment was the activity of dehydrogenases lower in both experimental variants with the sludge than in the control soil. Later it was observed to decline to the values reported for the control. Significant positive correlations occurred between the activity of the enzymes examined and soil pH.
