To understand the nutrient absorption and adaptability of plant species that initially colonize mounds and the influences of the plateau zokor on the diversity of the plant community after 4 years' period, a series of experiments was conducted in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The contents of C and N and the flow of N in pioneer species were measured and tracked using the ¹⁵N isotope tracer method, and the species diversity on 4-year-old mounds was investigated. The results showed that (1) plateau zokors could influence the plant species on the mounds by creating gaps in the grassland; (2) Elymus nutans and Elsholtzia feddei, with high rates and efficiencies of nutrient absorption and transportation, were more competitive on the newly formed mounds than other species; (3) Elymus nutans played a dominant role in the plant community of the mounds; and (4) plateau zokors did not change the plant diversity after 4 years' period. These findings indicated that species colonizing the mounds experienced a process of competition when gaps were created by the rodents, that species with greater capabilities for resource acquisition and utilization had stronger competitiveness and vice versa, and that after a few years, the plant diversity on the mounds was almost similar to that of the undisturbed grassland.
A total of 449 plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae Hudgson) individuals were sampled with rattraps from 21 plots (size 1 ha) randomly scattered over the area of the species distribution at the altitude 3275–4807 m a.s.l. in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (West China). Two main ectoparasite species Hypoderma satyrus Brauer and Ixodes crenulatus Neumann of plateau pika were surveyed, and the relations between host sex and parasitism were analyzed. The results were: (i) although not significantly, the infection rate of female young was close to zero and lower than that of male young (6%), while the infection rate of female sub-adults (19%) was contrarily – higher than that of male sub-adults (11%); adult females had significantly higher (41%) infection rate than that of males (18%) (P <0.001); (ii) the parasite infection rates for both males and females increased with increasing age, but female age-groups had obviously steeper slope. We suggested that the differences of body mass, growth rate and home range between males and females had mainly caused the sex-biased parasitism (SBP) of plateau pika at each age stage. Also, due to the higher increases of body mass and maybe as well as of the home range differences between consecutive age-groups, the parasite infections of females became more sensitive to the influences of age than that of males.
Three sites with both degraded alpine Kobresia meadow (DM) and adjacent mix-seeded perennial grasses pastures (MSP) in the headwater region of the Yellow River, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, were selected to investigate plant and soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and their isotope composition. The SOC and TN in the top soil layer to a depth of 10 cm were significantly affected by ploughing and planting mix-seeded perennial grasses. The SOC content in 0–10 cm soil layer of MSPs was 25.6%, 5.5% and 12.9% lower than those of DMs at the I-III sites, respectively, and the rate of OC density loss was 23.8, 14.5 and 18.2%, respectively. The soil TN content in 0–10 cm soil layer of MSPs was 16.6%, 2.2% and 9.4% lower than those of the DMs at three sites, respectively, and the TN density was 15.6, 10.6 and 15.3% lower than those of DMs, respectively. The plant and soil ¹³C values (-27.03‰, -25.16‰, respectively) suggest that the vegetation of both DMs and MSPs are C₃ plant communities. The 15 N value in the soil (>4‰) was significantly greater than in plants (<2‰). No differences of either ¹³C or ¹⁵N abundance between MSPs and DMs at Site I and II, but were found at Site III, indicating that the effects were site specific. The rehabilitation of a degraded Kobresia meadow has a significant influence on the soil properties, SOC and TN. Caution should be taken in site selection before performing conversion.
We studied the phylogeography of Swertia tetraptera Maxim, which is an annual herbaceous plant endemic to the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), by sequencing one intergenic chloroplast spacer, trnL-trnF (773 bp). The sampling design included 35 populations and 399 individuals, and spanned the entire distribution of the species. Forty-four haplotypes were characterized, and one of them was widely distributed in all of the populations. The level of differentiation among the populations studied was relatively low (GST = 0.128). Estimates of NST -GST for populations of S. tetraptera indicated that no phylogeographical structure exists, which was supported by the distribution of haplotypes. The neutrality test, mismatch distribution and a ‘star-like’ genealogy all suggested that this species experienced population expansion. According to the number of rare haplotype and geological evidence, this study suggested that two potential refugia existed during the last glaciation: the first refugium was identified in a restricted semi-continuous area around the eastern margin of the plateau; the second refugium was located in the central of QTP. In fact, the findings of our study are somewhat similar as the third phylogeographical structure occurring in the QTP, that is, alpine plants have refugia not only in the edge area but also in the Plateau platform. However, the location of plateau edge and plateau platform refugia is very different among them due to the difference of species-specific characteristic such as distributional range and life history traits.
