Gravid or subgravid females of the following three species belonging to the nematode genus Philometra were collected from marine perciform fishes of the Bonifacio Strait Marine Reserve, Corsica, France: Philometra justinei sp. nov. (prevalence 1.5%, intensity 11) and Philometra sp. (prevalence 3%, intensity 2) from the abdominal cavity and gonads, respectively, of the striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus (Mullidae), and Philometra serranellicabrillae Janiszewska, 1949 (prevalence 27%, intensity 2–6) from the gonads of the comber Serranus cabrilla (Serranidae). The newly described species, P. justinei, is mainly characterized by the absence of an anterior bulbous inflation of the oesophagus, body length of the gravid female (196 mm), conspicuously large amphids, number and distribution of cephalic papillae, and the morphology of larvae. It is the second known species of Philometra parasitizing fishes of the family Mullidae and the ninth species of this genus reported from marine fishes of the Mediterranean region. P. serranellicabrillae, studied for the first time by SEM, is redescribed.
The first occurrence of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus in the Pomeranian Bay (in 2007) and the occurrence of three very rarely noted species (tub gurnard Chelidonichthys lucerna, Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus) collected in 2007–2008 in the Pomeranian Bay, Szczecin Lagoon and Lake Dąbie are reported. Their expansion is probably due to increased sea temperatures resulting from climate change, as well as the inflow of saline water. The ‘visitors’ hosted eight pathogens from four taxonomic groups: Protozoa, Nematoda, Acanthocephala and Mollusca. Nematodes, the most numerous ones, were found in three host species. All the parasite species were new for the hosts examined; only the larvae of the acanthocephalan Corynosoma strumosum had already been recorded in one of the hosts (Chelidonichthys lucerna). The stomachs of almost all the fish examined were empty, but the species composition of the parasite fauna found showed that the fish must have ingested some food in the Pomeranian Bay.
Two preservatives, formalin and alcohol as well as the freezing method were studied to show their effect on three morphological characters of two fish species of the family Mullidae (Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus) collected from the Libyan coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea near Benghazi City. The results showed a variable effect of the preservatives used and the freezing techniques. Shrinkage was the most common effect observed in the preservation tests, although a number of increase cases were obtained as well.
The ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of Poracanthium furcatum (Opecoelidae), parasite of the fish Mullus surmuletus, were studied by electron microscopy. Results were compared with those documented for other digeneans, in particular with Opecoeloides furcatus, another opecoelid. Spermiogenesis follows the general pattern found in the Digenea. Nevertheless, a novel ultrastructural element is described. The posterior part of the centriole is unusual in that it comprises a central element. The mature spermatozoon of P. furcatum presents some characteristics allowing distinction between it and O. furcatus, contrary to the external morphology. It contains a lateral expansion, two mitochondria and a nuclear biflagellar region. Other important ultrastructural features in the spermatozoon include: external ornamentations of the plasma membrane, spine-like bodies, anterior and posterior extremities. All these elements of the male gamete are interesting criteria for phylogenetic studies.
