The research was conducted on a selected group of 65 healthy German Shepherd Dogs to determine Q angle values. The animals were tranquilized, positioned in ventrodorsal recumbency, and examined radiologically. The radiographs were converted into digital form and analyzed by specialized software to determine the lines and to make measurements. The Q angle assessment was based on the determination of two lines according to Kaiser and Miles in previous research. The first line was drawn from the cranial lip of the acetabulum of the hip joint to the centre of the femoral intercondylar notch. The second line was drawn from the femoral intercondylar notch to the tibial tuberosity. The angle between these two lines was the Q angle. The results were statistically analyzed, and basic statistical parameters were calculated, such as statistical mean (Me), standard deviation (SD), as well as minimum (Min) and maximum (Max) values. In our study the mean of the results was 17 with a standard deviation of 7.38. These results are are in agreement with the results of studies carried out on foxes, which suggests that the selection of patients of the same breed, size and similar body weight does not significantly reduce the standard deviation in determining the reference values. The differences between the right and left hind limbs were also observed in our study.
In Poland and other countries, the two breeds that are most commonly trained for police operations are the German Shepherd (GS) and the Belgian Shepherd Malinois (BSM). The purchase, training and maintenance of police dogs are very expensive. Appropriate preselection can lower those costs. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare GS and BSM dogs based on their performance in obedience, obstacle, defense and tracking tests. The study was performed on 222 dogs which participated in patrol-tracking training, patrol training and tracking training at the Kennel of the Police Training Center in Sułkowice. In many exercises: stay in obedience, stair climbing, balance beam, wooden wall and an obstacle course in obstacle completion, pursuit with a muzzle, pursuit without a muzzle and guarding detainees in defense, as well as field search, indoor search and vocalization in tracking, BSM were scored significantly better than GS.
A rare case of primary pleomorphic liposarcoma of the liver in an 8-year-old female German shepherd dog is described. The liver tumour, measuring 10x12x5 cm, was located in the right hepatic lobe. The diagnosis of pleomorphic liposarcoma was based on the morphological and immunohis- tochemical features of the tumour cells. To our knowledge, this is the second case of primary liposarcoma of the liver in the dog found in the veterinary literature.
This study was carried out to establish the body weight, survival rate and some body measurements in German Shepherd puppies during the suckling period. The Puppies were each weighed every seven days, and measured at ten different body sites every fourteen the day until weaning. The mean live weight of each puppy was measured as 776 g in the 1st week, 1750 g in the 4Ih week and 2614 g in the 8lh week. The survival rate for the puppies was calculated at 95.2% and 83%, respectively at the end of the 4th and 8lh week. Some of the body measurements of the puppies at the age when they were removed from suckling (52nd day) such as head length, head girth, body length, shoulder height, ear length, chest girth, rump height, front wrist girth, tail length and back wrist girth were found to be 14.76, 24.03, 22.97, 25.16, 5.93, 30.64, 24.16, 6.62, 15.51 and 5.99 cm, respectively.
