We have already discussed the Natura 2000 programme, which forms part of the paneuropean biodiversity and landscape diversification, in issues 10-11 in 1999. Until recently, each country had its own policy for establishing protected areas, which depended on political and economic considerations, research status, etc. This led to a great diversification in systems of protected areas in specific countries. With time, it was concluded that species and biotypes are protected effectively only when the same principles are applied throughout their whole geographic range. Coherent systems of protected areas have been established on these bases. NATURA 2000 presents such a system.
