A total of 103 strains of Aeromonas spp. isolated from clinical and from environmental samples was compared by using SDS-PAGE of periplasms proteins patterns. Strains isolated from Polish children suffering from gastroenteritis did not appear similar to strains isolated from human living in Hong-Kong. Aeromonas sp. strains did not show a tendency to cluster according to their origin. Our results have demonstrated no species-specifs periplasms protein profiles. A significant protein electrophoretic heterogeneity was observed within the species A. hydrophila, A. hestiarum, A. salmonicida, A. caviae, A. media, and A. vermin biotype sobria.

This report describes the isolation of Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria as the causative enteropathogen of diarrhoea in an oncological patient after failure of detection of other infectious agents. The case points out the severe and long course of the infection, the diagnostic dilemma, and the prompt recovery after antibiotic treatment.

Cytolytic toxins produced by Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii biotype sobria strains were partially purified from culture filtrates by two steps of purification: ammonium sulfate precipitation and hydrophobic chromatography using Phenyl-Sepharose CL-4B. Hemolytic activity was detected in one or two peaks in elution profile. Purified toxins were also cytotoxic to Vero and CHO cells. Moreover, these toxins revealed cytotonic activity to CHO cells.
