During the last 6 years 6491 pigs and 1700 cattle were examined for antibiotic residues. The samples of the kidneys, livers and muscles were taken by veterinary sanitary inspectors. Examinations were done by an agar disc method using Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 spores as the indicator bacterium. Positive results were confirmed by a cylinder-agar plate method. Antibiotic residues were detected in 42 pigs (0.65%) and 3 cows (0.18%). Streptomycin was found in 33 pigs, oxytetracycline in 9 pigs and 2 cows and penicillin only in one cow. The residues of antibiotics were found in the kidneys and livers but not in muscles. Residues of antibiotics can be assumed as sporadic. The may result from a therapeutic use of antibiotics and inobservance of their withdrawal time.
