The studies were performed on 54 hares from 5 hunting grounds in the hunting season 1986/87 and 1987/88. The hunting regions difered by a type of farming and by level of industrialization. The content of mercury in cortical and medulllar parts of kidneys were determined by the AAS method. The content of mercury in cortical part of kidneys was 0.113±0.080 mgkg-1 wet weight and in medullar part it was 0.078Ż0.052 mgkg-1 wet weight. These levels are comparable with those noted in neighbour European countries. The content of mercury, especially in cortex, increased with age of hares. The concentration of mercury in kidneys was negatively correlated with body weight. There exists also a significant correlation between the content of mercury in cortical and medullar part of kidneys. In young hares this correlation less evidenced.
