Previous studies in the Gulf of Gdańsk discussed the responses of selected enzymatic biomarkers to the contaminant gradient in fish and mussels. In the present study, flounder muscle and liver tissues were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB congeners: 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153 and 180), organochlorine pesticides (HCHs, HCB and DDTs), and trace metals (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Hg, Cr). An attempt was made to identify the relationship between the measured enzymatic biomarker responses (cholinesterases, malic enzyme, isocitrate dehydrogenase, glutathione S-transferase) and contaminant concentrations in selected flounder tissues. The observed differences in enzymatic biomarker levels suggest that chronic exposure to low-concentration mixtures of contaminants may be occurring in the studied area. However, no conclusive evidence was found of a clear link between the biomarker responses and contaminant concentrations in flounder tissues.
One specimen of III larval stage of Anisakis simplex was found in body cavity of female stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus caught in Southern Baltic, in Kołobrzeg. In stickleback from Baltic Sea A. simplex was noted for the first time. It usually occurre in many other species of fish.
Non-uniform germination of reed caryopses (from 0% for most samples to over 90%) at relatively stable temperatures (21 ± 1.9°C and 31.7 ± 1.0°C) and constant light was observed. On the average 70% of caryopses (panicles) kept in room conditions for 3, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 120 days from harvest showed a loss of the ability to germinate only in conditions of culture with a small amplitude of temperature variations (21 ± 1.9°C).
The aim of this paper is to establish the haematological and organic changes in halothane-sensitive and halothane-resistant pigs in the course of experimental anisakiosis. Experiments were carried out on two groups of pigs (3 animals each). The pigs from the first group were given fifty A. simplex B larvae, the pigs from the second one received ten larvae and then again fifteen larvae each after the 5th and 6th days. The number of leucocytes, neutrophiles, lymphocytes, monocytes and eosinophiles was greater - different in both series, but similar in halothane (stress) - resistant and - sensitive pigs. In the case of sensitive pigs much greater reactive changes were found in the stomach submucosa than in that of resistant pigs. In this group of pigs nematode larvae have also been traced in the submucosa of the same organ.
Samples of stomach fundus and pylorus tissue collected from eight dogs experimentally infected with third-stage A. simplex В larvae were examined macro- and microscopically. The histopathological changes in these samples were analysed. Pathomorphological examination revealed that A. simplex В larvae actively penetrated the dog’s stomach wall within 2 days of infection. The presence of larvae in the mucous membrane was accompanied by tissue damage and cell infiltration predominantly by eosinophils.
