The author analyzes the results of soil moisture assessments carried out every decade by observers in the agrometeorological network of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, and discusses the probability of occurrence, the range, and the duration of the phenomena of excessive and insufficient soil moisture content during the vegetation period. The author shows that the frequency of occurrence and spreading of soil droughts increases from April to August, and then decreases till October, approaching the initial levels observed during the spring. The frequency of occurrence of decades with excessive soil moisture does not show such regularities. Soil droughts are most often observed in the west and central regions of the country, while excessive soil moisture is most frequently met in the east and south-east regions. The longest soil drought on record lasted for 5-14 successive decades.
