First therapeutic trials with Bithionol in animals affected by Fasciola hepatica are discussed in the light of literature data. The drug was used in a patient who had been infected with F. hepatica 4 years ago; one therapeutic course was followed by a complete suppression of the parasite. Within 12-month follow-up, feces and duodenal content were examined for the presence of F. hepatica eggs.
Five patients infected with Taenia saginata were treated successfully with Bithionol (Actamer). In all of them a 1-day therapeutic course resulted in the parasite exmission within 24-hour period. In 3 patients, a 1-day course was sufficient to bring about a complete cure; in one case two courses were necessary, and one patient refused to come for follow-up examination or eventual repetition of the treatment. The drug tolerance was good.
