A preliminary description is given of two new species of rodents from the Pliocene steppe - fauna (Astian) of Węże 1 - Plioselevinia gromovi n. gen., n. sp. and Sminthozapus janossyi n. gen., n. sp.
A description is here given of the bone remains of a Pliocene porcupine, identified as Hystrix primigenia (Wagner ), found at Węże near Działoszyn and heretofore recorded from Pikermi (Greece) and Roussillon (France). An analysis of the lower molars shows certain similarities in the enamel structure with H. sivalensis Lydekker, described from the Pliocene of India (Siwalik Hills) and that of the living H.cristata L. Differences in structure of outer enamel loops, particularly those of the upper molars, the presence of accessory elements in the crowns of these molars (in the posterior parts of teeth) might possibly be suggestive of a new species. Nevertheless, in spite of incomplete material , a number of features identical with those in H. primigenia postulate the assignment of the Działoszyn form to that species.
Twenty three species of Lagomorpha and Rodentia from the Pliocene bone breccia from Węże 1 near Działoszyn are described and figured, among them the following are considered new: Pliosciuropterus n.gen., Sciurus warthae n.sp., Eutamias orlovi n.sp., Pliosciuropterus schaubi n.sp. and Steneofiber wenzensis n.sp. Moreover, Pliosciuropterus dehneli n.sp. from Węże 2 is described. The origin and age of the bone breccia from Węże 1 are discussed, palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic conclusions are drawn and the phylogenesis of some rodents described considered.
Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest otwornicom tortońskim i sarmackim z grupy Miliolidea, pochodzącym z wiercenia w Suchowoli (południowe zbocze Gór Świętokrzyskich w okolicy Osieka Sandomierskiego). Na podstawie wyników badań tych otwornic i na podstawie oznaczonych w poprzednich badaniach tego wiercenia mięczaków autor podaje charakterystykę stratygraficzną i facjalną przebitych wierceniem poziomów.
A fragmentary upper jaw with teeth, unattached teeth of the lower jaw from the Maruszów quarry and a single isolated lateral lower tooth from the Nasiłów outcrop have been described, all of them belonging to the Upper Cretaceous (uppermost Maastrichtian) marine carnivorous reptiles of the genus Mosasaurus Conybeare, 1822.
This paper contains a description of 18 insectivore species recovered from the bone breccia at Węże near Działoszyn (province of Łódź). The described forms include four new species and one new genus: Erinaceus samsonowiczi n. sp., Blarinoides mariae n. gen ., n.sp., Neomys soriculoides n. sp., Suncus zelceus n. sp. The writer explains his methods of work and discusses the age and origin of the breccia, as well as the problem of the palaeogeographic distribution of some species found in the Węże bone breccia.
Some of the insectivore species previously described by the writer (Sulimski, 1959) are revised. One new genus and three new species of the Soricidae are described: Zelceina n. gen., Sorex subminutus n. sp., S. hibbardi n. sp. and S. kretzoii n. sp. A description is also given of Desmana pontica Schreuder and D. cf. kormosi Schreuder - two species thus far not recorded from the Węże breccia, and of the skull of Erinaceus samsonowiczi Sulimski.
A small fauna of Middle Pliocene Microvertebrates (Insectivora, Chiroptera, Rodentia: Mammalia) is described from the cave Mała (Jaskinia Mała) at Zelce Hill near Działoszyn (Northern Kraków-Wieluń Jurassic Upland in Central Poland). This mammalian fauna provides some analogies with the fauna of Early (Turolian, Pannonian or Pontian) or Middle Pliocene localities of Central and west Europe. Among the 18 species from the cave Mała, Epimeriones austriacus and parapodemus lugdunensis were not known previously in the Pliocene fauna of Poland. Amblycoptus topali is recorded here for the second time in Poland and for the third time in Central Europe. All forms described in the present paper are found in layers 4+5 of the cave Mała.
