The conifers prevail in 90 per cent in the forests of the Katowice province. These trees characterized by a low resistance to industrial pollution are susceptible to noxious insects. It is a heritage of the policy of the Prussian authorities from the period of an early capitalism when the forests were revived by planting new trees but only pines and spruces. The enormous pollution of the atmosphere in Silesia exerts an adverse effect not only on the overground portions of the trees but it also poisons their habitats. Next the extractive industry causes high disorders in hydrological relations.
