In Poland edible honeysuckle becomes more and more popular, especially in amateurish cultivation. There is a little information about cultivation technology. The aim of this study carried out in 2008–2009 was to examine the influence of Goëmar® BM 86 and calcium nitrate on yielding and fruiting quality of two cultivars of blue honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica): ‘Atut’ and ‘Duet’. Using the fertilization with calcium nitrate, applied to the soil around plants, in April at the rate of 50 kg·ha⁻¹, alone or with Goëmar® BM 86 (applied three times during the bloom period at the dose of 3 l·ha⁻¹) was compared to untreated plants. Fertilizers had no positive effect on the yield and the mass of 100 fruit. Fertilizers did not influence significantly on the dry matter, soluble solids, reductive sugar and anthocyanins content. The influence of Goëmar® BM 86 and calcium nitrate on acidity of berries was inconsistent. Honeysuckle berries of cv. ‘Atut’, after using the mentioned combination of preparations, reacted by increasing in acid concentrations, however acid content of ‘Duet’ berries significantly decreased in comparison to the control. The quality features of honeysuckle berries were strongly dependent on the weather conditions during vegetation period.
The studies on the period and abundance of blooming, flower development, as well as nectar productivity of two cultivars of Lonicera kamtschatica (Sevast.) Pojark. were carried out in 2004-2005 in Lublin. The investigated plants bloomed between the third decade of April and the middle of May. The life span of protogynous flowers was about 4-5 days. The mean amount of sugars secreted by 10 flowers of the examined cultivars ranged from 17.77 mg to 28.31 mg. The sugars yield amounted to from 44.08 to 67.81 kg.ha-1. Flowers of the investigated plants were a good nectar source for honeybees and bumblebees.
The studies performed in 1997 - 1999 have shown that herbicides such as Azotop 50 (simazine, 6-chloro-N, N-diethyl-l,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) in the dose 1 kg ha- 1 or Afalon 50 WP (linuron, N'-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)N-methoxy-N-methylurea) in dose 1.5 kg ha-1 or its mixture with Dual 960 EC (metolachlor, 2-chloro- N(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-l-methylethyl) acetamide) in dose 1.5 1 ha-1 applied in early spring significantly decreased number of weeds in nursery of sour cherry trees cv. Lutówka budded on Prunus mahaleb L rootstocks as compared with mechanical weed control. Both, Azotop 50 and Azotop 50 in mixture with Dual 960 EC eliminated weeds for the longer period than Afalon 50 WP and Afalon 50 WP with Dual 960 EC. Herbicides did not affect tree trunk diameter (at 30 cm. from the ground level), the number and total length of shoots of one-year-old sour cherry trees in comparison with mechanical control of weeds.
