Atrakcyjność turystyczna Giżycka

100%
From the point of view of tourist traffic, historical objects of military purpose are considered very significant attractions. Fortress objects are listed within the niche of cultural, educational, and historical tourism, or, in a wider perspective, of the sightseeing tourism. According to the sightseeing values classification, they may be included into the group of "architectural, constructional and town planning monuments of technology", as well as considered "other material evidence of the past''. Definitely they may also be classified as "historical sites'', and sometimes as "national memoriał places". If they have maintained their high aesthetic status, certainly they may be included, along with their surroundings, into the group of sightseeing values as "characteristic sightseeing complex'' (the latter regards especially the spectacular forms of the pre-20th century fortresses) The Boyen Fortress in Giżycko, built in the 19th century, is definitely a prominent sightseeing attraction of the Great Mazury Lakes District. Located in a narrow isthmus of about 750 meters between the lakes of Niegocin and Kisajno, it is probably the most important, and certainly the biggest historical object in this part of Warmia and Mazury. The proper object is the area of about 21 ha, surrounded with over 2,300 meters of wall. Together with all the adjusting neighbourhoods related to the object's functions, the total area amounts to 100 ha. At the moment the Boyen Fortress is a rather poorly managed object. The problem of its management has at least two planes. The first one is connected with the necessary immediate measures, the second relates to the potential considerable investments to increase the attractiveness of the object. The necessary measures include any repair and reconstruction works, securing the dangerous areas and constructions, as well as the visitors' traffic control. All the problems of this kind result from the former many years of lack of attention towards the object. The most important task is granting full security to the visitors. A crucial component of these works is also the need to remove any unnecessary buildings or elements of nature from within the object grounds. One of the important needs is also extending the worlcing period of the youth hostel, which is now open only from the beginning of May until the end of September. Another serious asset to the attractiveness of the Boven Fortress would be the development of the museum, whose exhibition is very poor at the moment. The amphitheatre located in one of the ravelins might be a significant advantage. There is also a very interesting idea to develop the entire so-called Island of Giżycko, not just the Fortress itself, into a cultural park. According to these concepts, the Fortress would be transformed into an extensive museum of military technology.
