The study was aimed at an analysis of the effect that mating and whelping terms might have on the number of offspring of mink. Two primary reproduction-related traits were analysed: the number of born pups and the number of raised, or weaned, pups. More than 3600 litters were analysed over three years. The females were distributed into four groups depending on the date of mating, and into four other groups in respect to whelping date. The analysis of variance demonstrated a statistically significant effect of the date of the first mating, as well as the birth date of the offspring, on the number of born and raised pups. The highest mean numbers of born and raised pups was observed for the females mated within the first term (until 5 March). Minimally lower values were achieved by those mated within the third term, and slightly lower by those mated within the second term.
Dietary polyphenols are considered beneficial because of their potential protective role in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases associated to oxidative stress. However, many of these effects may depend on the concentration of the antioxidants used. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of quercetin, chlorogenic acid and epigallocatechin on proliferation of human colon adenocarcinoma cells Caco-2. Caco-2 cells were treated with different concentrations (25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 μM in DMSO) of antioxidants and the proliferation was assayed by MTT method. The results of the study indicated that chlorogenic acid and quercetin enhanced Caco-2 cells proliferation in time- and concentration-dependent manner. In contrary, epigallocatechin exhibit inhibitory influence, particularly significant at concentration ≥ 200 μM.
The aim of this study was an analysis of the factors that influence body size and hair coat quality of standard minks (Mustela vison Sch.). The analysis covered 3837 animals belonging to three genetic groups: one domestic (native) and two groups of half–imports (one of the parents, sire, imported from Denmark or Holland).
