Increased productivity in fruit production involves using more fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or even growth substances. All this gives rise to consumer fears about whether the fruits grown this way are safe. The author asks what hazards are connected with the use of these substances, whether we can produce fruit without them, and whether giving them up can be justfied.
