405 cases of traumatic bone fractures in dogs and cats registered at the University and Clinic of Animal Surgery in Wrocław in 1991/92 were investigated. The case history, clinical and radiological examinations of each individual case enabled the classification of bone fractures and indicated the appropriateness of the treatment of the osteogenesis bone fractures by the ZESPOL method. It was found that the ZESPOL method can be used at about 75% of the cases of fractures of the femoral, shin, brachial and forearm bones. An evaluation of the causes and frequency of various types of fractures were discussed.
The aim of the study was to determine the characteristic clinical symptoms and discuss the laboratory results in correlation with histopathology test results in dogs having blood detected in the peritoneal cavity. The examinations were performed on 11 individuals in whom diagnostic abdominal punctures had revealed blood in peritoneal cavity. All the dogs were subjected to clinical examination, morphological and biochemical blood tests, abdominal USG and peritoneal cavity fluid examination. Seven out of the 11 dogs were put to sleep and autopsy was carried out. Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed on 4 dogs. Clinical examinations in all the dogs revealed pale mucous membranes, prolonged capillary filling time, muffled heart sounds, accelerated pulse. Laboratory blood tests showed a decrease in hematocrite, hemoglobin and albumin values. USG diagnoses confirmed the presence of fluid in the peritoneal cavity of all the dogs. Cytological examination of the peritoneal cavity fluid sediment smears demonstrated the presence of adenocarcinoma cells in 2 cases, and cancer cells in one case. The results of the histopathology examination of the malignant tumors in these 2 dogs facilitated the diagnosis of colon adenocarcinoma and ovary cancer in one of the dogs. As far as the benign tumors were concerned cavernous angioma of the liver was diagnosed in one dog and spleen angioma in 3 dogs. In the remaining 4 dogs the reason for bleeding into peritoneal cavity was liver and spleen hematomas. Determining the hematocrite value in the abdominal fluid and peripheral blood which facilitated distinguishing acute bleeding from chronic bleeding was a clinically significant examination allowing perceiving a differentiation within the peritoneal cavity fluid.
In this article, the surgical procedure performed on 12 dogs with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was described. Diagnostic methods included basic diagnostic procedures along with electrocardiography, x-ray and echocardiography. Moreover, gasometry of blood samples taken from the right atrium, right ventricle and pulmonary artery was conducted for each patient. In 2 cases diagnostic procedures were expanded to a contrast study by means of fluoroscopy. A cardiac catheter was placed through the femoral artery to the left ventricle, and subsequently, passing the PDA, to the pulmonary artery. This article includes a description of typical dangers encountered with this kind of surgery and methods of their avoidance. PDA closure was done with nonresorbable surgical material Ticron cardiovascular and titanium made vascular clips. Moreover, methods of surgical wound closure after thoracotomy and air removal from the pleural space were discussed. All of these 12 operated dogs recovered with no complications. Several years of permanent monitoring of their clinical status proved the usefulness of this method. There were no signs of cardiovascular abnormalities nor developing impairment. We recommend this surgical procedure for patent ductus arteriosus treatment.
