The importance of abiotic stresses in plant production are discussed and possibilities of improving crop tolerance to those stresses with the use of conventional breeding strategies are summarized. The need for substantial plant production increase using biological potential of crops is stressed. The new possibilities emerging from dynamic development of recombinant DNA methods in elucidating the mechanisms of crop response to abiotic stresses and prospects of breakthrough in breeding practices are presented.
