The highest withaferin A content (700 µg/g dry wt) was obtained in Withania somnifera shoots grown for 5 weeks on NN medium supplemented with 0.0287 g ZnSO₄/l vs. 400 pg withaferin A/g dry wt in the control culture. After 7 weeks the production was more than 20% of the control value suggesting some adaptation to Zn²⁺. The highest concentration of glutathione (900 µg/g fresh wt = 13.5 mg/g dry wt) was with at 0.144 g ZnSO₄/l. Under this conditions withaferin A accumulation was lower (200 µg/g dry wt). ZnSO₄ at 0.287 g/1 inhibited the growth of the plantlets.
