In the biosphere, life develops abundantly on the interfaces between macrospheres: surfaces of land, coastal zones and upper layers of waters. The author is interested in land surfaces covered by soil, vegetation and animal life associated with them — which are biologically active surfaces.
Academy of Steel and Mining Industry (AGH), as the first technical higher education institution in Poland and possibly worldwide, came to the conclusion that teaching technology should also include environmental studies. This notion was first expressed by prof. Walery Goetel, Rector of AGH, long before the Second World War. This idea was first developed by the Geology Department, in a seminar on environment and resources, and then taken up by the Institute of Environmental Management and Protection, at the Mining Geodesy Department which began interdisciplinary studies in 1989.

Wild mushroom picking, long a national hobby and pastime, is now becoming profitable. A growing demand for forest mushrooms is not only posing a threat to their survival, but - because of their symbiosis (mycorrhiza) with taller vegetation - to forests themselves. Hence, the culture of mushroom picking and the related legal regulations are becoming crucial. The author discusses the key ordinances in force, as well as the regulations on public forest car traffic and parking and access to forest plantations.

Sustainable development does not originate from tendency to improve human life. It is a necessary condition for our civilisation to survive. Achieving it is not a matter of our aspirations but survival. Sustainable development is forced upon us by the state of the natural environment, which, when compared with its natural condition, has been so deeply affected that any further transformation of it threatens, for the first time in the human history, a global ecological disaster and a civilisation catastrophe. Sustainable development may not mean improved standard of living for all people. On the contrary, wealthy countries must limit their propensity to better their living conditions to allow poorer countries to develop. Grounds for these harsh conclusions are presented in the article.
